Fellow Svengoolie SvenPals everywhere will be jumping for joy for his upcoming big broadcast of a classic Hammer Films–Universal Studios horror/monster masterpiece.
“Svengoolie” presents his big broadcast of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960)
Original 1958 Universal Studios theatrical teaser trailer for the United States theatrical release of the Hammer Films production of Terence Fisher’s “The Brides of Dracula.”
The legendary Berwyn/Chicago-based horror/monster film host will present his big broadcast of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960), this Sat.; July 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
The 1960 Hammer-Universal “Dracula” monster-horror masterpiece was directed by veteran Hammer director Terence Fisher. Fisher’s other Hammer horror masterpieces include “The Curse of Frankenstein” (1957), “Horror of Dracula” (1958), the latter Universal/Hammer screen adaptation of “The Mummy” (1959), “The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll” (1960) and “The Gorgon” (1964). Fisher’s 1960 Hammer “Dracula” entry was produced by veteran Hammer producers Michael Carreras, Anthony Hinds and Anthony Nelson Keys. Hinds also served in an uncredited position for co-writing the screenplay for “The Brides of Dracula” (1960), with veteran Hammer screenwriters Jimmy Sangster, Edward Percy and Peter Bryan.
This will mark Sven’s eighth big broadcast of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960) on Me-TV. He previously showcased Fisher’s classic 1960 Hammer-Universal “Dracula” horror masterpiece back in April 2011*, June 2012*, May 2013, June 2014, Feb. 2015, Dec. 2016 and Oct. 2017. Sven’s April 2, 2011 big broadcast presentation of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960) also marked Sven/Rich Koz’s big coast-to-coast big broadcast debut on the airlanes of Me-TV, according to the Monster Kid Classic Horror Forum.
Who was in Terence Fisher’s Hammer-Universal production of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960)?
The players who appeared in Fisher’s 1960 Hammer-Universal production of “The Brides of Dracula” were Peter Cushing (as Dr. Van Helsing, the legendary Hammer horror personality previously played the role of Van Helsing opposite legendary Hammer horror personality Christopher Lee as Count Dracula in Fisher’s 1958 Hammer-Universal classic monster adaptation masterpiece, “Horror of Dracula” ), Martita Hunt (as Baroness Meinster), Yvonne Monlaur (as Marianne Danielle, Monlaur also appeared in the 1960 Hammer-Columbia adventure thriller with Christopher Lee, “Terror of the Tongs” (1960), Andree Melly (as Gina), Freda Jackson (as Greta), David Peel (as Baron Meinster), Miles Malleson (as Dr. Tobler, Malleson previously appeared in the role of the undertaker Marx in 1958’s “Horror of Dracula” with Cushing and Lee), Henry Oscar (as Herr Lang), Mona Washbourne (as Frau Lang), Victor Brooks (as Hans), Fred Johnson (as Cure), Michael Ripper (as a coachman), Vera Cook (as the landlord’s wife), Marie Devereux (as a village girl) and Norman Pierce (as a landlord).
Christopher Lee’s Hammer “Dracula” absence
According to details from Richard Harland Smith’s Turner Classic Movies online article on “The Brides of Dracula” (1960), it was reported that Christopher Lee did not want to be typecast in monster film roles for Hammer Films, as he was seeking more character-based roles in his screen career. Lee reprised his role of Count Dracula, beginning with Terence Fisher’s classic Hammer monster masterpiece production of “Dracula: Prince of Darkness” (1966). Lee and Peter Cushing would have a “Dracula” reunion in Alan Gibson’s latter Hammer-Warner Bros. classic monster masterpiece, “Dracula A.D.: 1972” (1972, with Lee as Count Dracula, Cushing played the descendant of Dr. Van Helsing, Prof. Lorrimer Van Helsing in the 1972 Hammer-Warners feature).
Hammer Films’ model “Bat” prop gaffe in “The Brides of Dracula”
Hammer propmasters spent a considerable amount of time constructing a life-like model bat for Fisher’s production of “The Brides of Dracula;” according to details from IMDB. It was reported that the original life-like bat model was lost and a new bat model was quickly constructed with cost-saving materials for the production.
A new “Dracula”-style look for David Peel’s role of Baron Meinster in “The Brides of Dracula”
According to additional information from IMDB, David Peel’s portrayal of Baron Meinster in Fisher’s Hammer production of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960) was different than the typical “Dracula” characterization, as Peel’s characterization was written as a “distinguished” vampire. Hammer make-up artists gave Peel a blonde wig to differentiate his character from Count Dracula.
Universal’s promotional gimmicks and tie-ins for the release of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960) in the United States
For the theatrical release of Terence Fisher’s Hammer production of “The Brides of Dracula” (1960) in the United States, Universal Studios’ publicity department encouraged participating theatrical venues from coast-to-coast to have promotional gimmicks and tie-ins, according to a June 1960 Film Bulletin article. Some of the promotional gimmicks included “blood red” sidewalk stencil advertising art for local theaters, a cardboard cutout of David Peel’s portrayal of Baron Meinster, a “Dracula’s Bride” contest, midnight screening parties, ticket giveaways, a “Dracula” stagecoach promotion and “First Aid” stations in case any patrons fainted during the screening of the 1960 Hammer “Dracula” feature.
Universal also teamed up with Monarch Books to publish a paperback novel adaptation of “The Brides of Dracula” with a scented cover.
