“Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) was directed, co-written and co-produced by veteran puppet/animatronic designer/puppeteer and stop-motion animator Stephen Chiodo. Chiodo began his career as a graphic designer for the newscasts for ABC‘s network-owned TV station in New York City WABC-TV (sister station to ABC’s network-owned Berwyn/Chicago TV station, WLS-TV). He later moved to the Washington, D.C. area to work with veteran animator/cartoonist Walt Kelly and director Marc Paul Chinoy as a production designer for the classic stop-motion animation adaptation of Kelly’s possum comic strip, “Pogo;” titled “I Go Pogo” (1980) with the vocal stylings of legends Vincent Price, Jonathan Winters, Ruth Buzzi (of Rowan & Martin’s “Laugh-In” fame), Stan Freberg and Arnold Stang (of the “Chunky” chocolate bar TV commercials fame). He later moved to Hollywood, California and joined his brothers Charles Chiodo and Edward Chiodo to form Chiodo Bros. Productions.
The Chiodo Bros. are best-known for their numerous custom props, puppets, animatronic, stop-motion animation creations and special effects for the motion picture and television industry over the years; including the design of the Critters for the New Line Cinema “Critters” series of films from 1986–92, animated effects consultants for Tim Burton‘s classic mammoth Warner Bros. feature comedy masterpiece featuring Paul “Pee-Wee Herman” Reubens, “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” (1985), the motion control robot puppet “Catfish”** for Sony Imagesoft (today’s Sony Interactive Entertainment) & Digital Pictures’ full-motion video interactive video game for the Sega CD (attachment for the Sega Genesis) & 3DO game console formats, “Sewer Shark” (1992), the “Rankin/Bass“-style holiday stop-motion figurines for Jon Favreau‘s modern classic mammoth New Line Cinema holiday comedy masterpiece featuring Will Ferrell, “Elf” (2003); including the “Leon the Snowman” stop-motion character featuring the vocal stylings of the legendary Leon Redbone; the “supermarionation”-style figurines for Trey Parker & Matt Stone (of “South Park” fame)’s modern classic mammoth Paramount Pictures comedy-farce masterpiece, “Team America: World Police” (2004) and a stop-motion animated sequence for legendary Los Angeles-based horror/sci-fi film host Elvira (portrayed by Cassandra Petersen)’s brief classic mammoth syndicated masterpiece revival of “Elvira’s Movie Macabre” for her 2010 showcase of the cult classic mammoth Nicholas Webster-Embassy Pictures holiday-fantasy masterpiece production of “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” (1964).
The cult classic mammoth 1988 horror/sci-fi/comedy masterpiece production was co-produced by veteran executive producers/production officials Moshe Diamant and Paul Mason, along with veteran associate producers/production officials J.J. Lichauco Pelman, Christopher Roth, Eduard Sarlui and Helen Szabo; the real-life sister of Sarlui (she received screen credit under the name of Helen Sarlui-Tucker). The Chiodo Bros.’ “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) was released through Moshe Diamant and Eduard Sarlui’s independent releasing firm Trans World Entertainment*; according to IMDB. Trans World Entertainment* would be later folded into another production/releasing/distribution firm that was headed by Diamant, Epic Productions; according to Variety. After a series of complicated ownership deals and due in part from Trans World’s reliance on financing for productions from France’s banking firm Crédit Lyonnais (the aforementioned banking firm would later have many financial problems of their own); the Chiodo Bros.’ production of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) and the majority of the TWE/Epic Productions library* later wound up in the hands of the current incarnation of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), according to the Los Angeles Times. Sidebar: Diamant and Saruli’s Trans World Entertainment* was not connected to a similar named company that specialized in mall-based and shopping center-based record and video stores. The other “Trans World Entertainment” now operates under the name of “Kaspien Holdings” for e-commerce sales; the company’s retail-based stores under the “FYE/For Your Entertainment” name throughout North America were later sold off to Canada’s Sunrise Records retail group. Though the two companies shared the “Trans World Entertainment” name, the two companies were never related in any form. -C.H.

Additional insight into the Chiodo Bros.’ inspirations for “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988)
According to Jon Beifuss’ Nov. 2001 syndicated article/column on the Chiodo Bros. and “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” that was published in the Wilmington Star-News, it was mentioned that one of the Chiodos’ inspirations for their classic mammoth 1988 sci-fi farce feature film masterpiece production came from memories of watching the past Thanksgiving Day “Million Dollar Movie” marathons of the classic mammoth Ernest B. Schoedsack– Merian C. Cooper–Willis O’Brien–David O. Selznick–RKO Radio Pictures* stop-motion creature/fantasy masterpiece, “King Kong” (1933), which featured Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Noble Johnson, Victor Wong, Bruce Cabot, Frank Reicher and the “eighth wonder of the world,” Kong; which was seen via New York’s WOR-TV (which was owned by General Tire eons ago, which bought RKO Radio Pictures from industrial tycoon Howard Hughes in 1955). The Chiodo Bros. decided to make “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) as a tribute to the classic mammoth horror, monster and sci-fi feature film masterpieces; according to Nathaniel Thompson’s 2018 Turner Classic Movies online article.
The other inspiration for “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) was from the Chiodo Bros.’ self-interests in stop-motion animation effects and filmmaking. Stephen Chiodo and his brothers produced and filmed short, stop-motion animation movies with their Super 8mm home movie camera in their basement, along with short film projects that the brothers compiled during their years in college. It was reported that the Chiodo Bros.’ earliest works were inspired by many of the cult classic mammoth monster/horror and sci-fi masterpiece features that were commonly screened at Drive-In theaters throughout the country. Some of the titles of their home movie creations included “Land of Terror” and “Beast from the Egg;” according to additional details from Nathaniel Thompson’s 2018 TCM online article and Tim Salmons’ 2018 article on the Arrow Films/Arrow Video/MGM Blu-Ray release of the Chiodo Bros.’ 1988 feature-length production for Bill Hunt’s home entertainment journal, The Digital Bits.
On-location filming for the Chiodo Bros.’ “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988)
For exterior/outdoor filming location sequences for the Chiodo Bros.’ classic mammoth Trans World sci-fi farce masterpiece production of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988), the areas that were utilized for outdoor filming sequences were in the town of Watsonville, California and at the famed Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park in Santa Cruz, California; according to Wallace Baine’s 2019 San Francisco Chronicle article on feature film productions that were filmed on location at the Santa Cruz boardwalk.
It was reported that the Santa Cruz Boardwalk’s “Fright Walk” attraction featured a segment that was inspired by and dedicated to the Chiodo Bros.’ production of “Kilker Klowns from Outer Space.”
“Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988): A feature film production that was later re-discovered in the home entertainment field.
Diamant and Sarlui’s Trans World Entertainment releasing firm was known for financing and releasing medium-to-low-budget features that had a limited theatrical release. The productions that were financed by Diamant and Sarlui, including “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) would reap larger profits for the growing home entertainment industry, primarily for the VHS, Betamax and LaserDisc formats at the time by licensing the rights to numerous independent home entertainment distributors, along with pay-per-view/cable and broadcast television syndication licensing rights to distributors/syndicators.
Alongside the earlier Media Home Entertainment/Heron VHS and LaserDisc (via Image Entertainment) editions with numerous pay-per-view/premium cable network and syndicated TV airings of the production, it was noted that the production of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) was re-discovered thanks in part to MGM’s DVD and VHS releases of the Chiodo Bros. classic mammoth 1988 sci-fi farce masterpiece under the “Midnite Movies” moniker, according to additional details from Jon Beifuss’ Nov. 2001 syndicated article/column. Alongside the post-1952 United Artists library, MGM’s “Midnite Movies” moniker also featured many of the classic mammoth horror/thriller/monster/sci-fi masterpiece productions from Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures, which was sold to Filmways in 1979; Filmways was later acquired by Orion Pictures in 1982 and MGM acquired Orion outright in 1997. After MGM’s acquisition of the Trans World/Epic library via its acquisition of the pre-1996 PolyGram Filmed Entertainment holdings, “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) was immediately placed into MGM’s Orion holdings; according to Claudia Eller’s Oct. 1998 Los Angeles Times article.
According to additional details from Thompson’s 2018 TCM online article and the YouTube channel of Thom CD-ROM, a bonus music video version of The Dickies‘ classic mammoth title track source soundtrack recording to the Chiodo Brothers’ production of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) was included as a bonus on the end of the original Media VHS and Media/Image Entertainment LaserDisc releases of the film. It was reported that the latter MGM “Midnite Movies” VHS and DVD editions, along with the MGM Blu-Ray and now out-of-print Arrow Video/MGM Blu-Ray editions of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (1988) do not include the music video version of The Dickies’ “Killer Klowns” title track for reasons unknown.

Hammer filmed “The Abominable Snowman” in the “Cinemascope” widescreen process due to Twentieth Century Fox (Twentieth Century Studios)’s involvement in the production- but was released under the “Regalscope” moniker due to producer Robert L. Lippert’s involvement with “B”-budget productions that were co-financed and/or distributed by Twentieth Century Fox (Twentieth Century Studios); according to film historian Martin Hart’s American Widescreen Museum entry on the Twentieth Century Fox (Twentieth Century Studios) “CinemaScope” widescreen process.

In connection to legendary Chicago Polka bandleader Eddie Korosa Jr.’s recent guest appearance on Toony & Bill’s “Oktoberfest” edition of “Toon In With Me!” Surprised that Toony & Bill didn’t mention this to the junior Korosa during the “Okotoberfest” edition of “Toon In With Me” on Me-TV- the Korosa family has a connection to Me-TV’s home station/home headquarters in Chicago, Illinois; WCIU-TV 26! Back when WCIU was headquartered at the Chicago Board of Trade building, the senior Eddie Korosa, his Polka band and his family had a weekly Chicago Polka variety show series, titled “Eddie Korosa’s Polka Party,” according to vintage off-air WCIU recordings that were unearthed years ago by Chicago/Berwyn television archivist Rick Klein’s “FuzzyMemoriesTV: The Museum of Classic Chicago Television!” Yes, the same Chicago Board of Trade Building where Sven/Rich Koz returned as “Svengoolie” for his early WCIU/26 “The U” Berwyn/Chicago Sven big broadcast shows in 1995, before Weigel/WCIU moved to 26 North Halsted in Chicago!
