The classic mammoth 1968 Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” was co-directed by veteran Toho Studios feature film director and the father of kaiju creature cinema, Ishirô Honda and veteran Toho Studios feature film drector Jun Fukuda.
Honda’s best-known productions throughout his feature film directorial career include his classic mammoth Toho Studios pioneering kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Gojira”/”Godzilla” (1954, released in the United States under the title of “Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” with added scenes directed by Terry O. Morse that featured Raymond Burr of TV’s “Perry Mason” fame), “Rodan“ (1956), “Mothra” (1961, released through Columbia Pictures in the United States), “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1963, released through Universal Studios in the United States). “Mothra vs. Godzilla” (1964, released theatrically in the United States by Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures under the title of “Godzilla vs. the Thing”), “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster” (1964), “The War of the Gargantuas” (1966), “All Monsters Attack” (1969, released theatrically in the United States under the title of “Godzilla’s Revenge”) and “Terror of Mechagodzilla” (1975).
Alongside his numerous classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature cinema masterpiece productions throughout the majority of his filmmaking career, Honda also specialized in several classic mammoth sci-fi feature film masterpiece productions for Toho Studios included “The H-Man” (1958) and “Battle in Outer Space” (1959). Honda’s Toho productions of “The H-Man,” “Battle in Outer Space” and “Mothra” were released theatrically in the United States through Columbia Pictures by arrangement with Toho Studios, Columbia/Sony still owns the North American theatrical re-release, television syndication and home entertainment/streaming distribution rights to Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios feature masterpiece productions of “The H-Man,” “Battle in Outer Space” and “Mothra”).
Jun Fukuda previously directed the classic mammoth Toho Studios action-adventure spy comedy masterpiece production of “Ironfinger” (1965) with Akira Takarada, Mie Hama and Ichirô Arishima; which was Toho Studios’ answer to the classic mammoth Guy Hamilton-Eon Productions-United Artists “James Bond”/”007” action-adventure spy masterpiece production of “Goldfinger” (1964) with Sean Connery. Fukuda’s first kaiju creature production was his classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Ebirah, Horror of the Deep” (1966). His other classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece productions include “Son of Godzilla” (1967, released in the United States through the now-defunct theater/cinema circuit, the Walter Reade Organization and their Continental Distribution subsidiary), “Godzilla vs. Gigan” (1972), “Godzilla vs. Megalon” (1973), “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla” (1974) and “Terror of Mechagodzilla” (1975).
The original screenplay for the classic mammoth Honda-Fukuda production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) for Toho Studios was co-written by Honda, along with veteran screenwriter Takeshi Kimura; who received screen credit under the pseudonym of Kaoru Mabuchi.
Veteran producer Tomoyuki Tanaka produced the original Toho Studios theatrical release edition of Honda’s classic mammoth 1968 kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” in Japan. Tanaka helped supervise many of the classic mammoth Toho Studios “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kaiju creature feature masterpiece productions for the majority of his feature film producing career; dating back to Honda’s original classic mammoth 1954 Toho Studios “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kaiju creature masterpiece production and concluding with Tako Okawara‘s modern classic mammoth Toho Studios “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kajiu creature masterpiece production of “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah” (1995, the North American theatrical dub release was later handled through Columbia Pictures/Sony’s TriStar Pictures imprint). Alongside Honda, it was noted that Tanaka was the other pioneer of Toho Studios’ classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece productions, notably for the studio’s classic mammoth “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kaiju feature film masterpiece productions.
The U.S. dubbed edition of Ishiro Honda’s classic mammoth 1968 Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” was handled by Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures. Both Arkoff and Nicholson established American-International as the American Releasing Corporation in 1954, according to the Samuel Z. Arkoff papers collection housed at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Arkoff later sold American-International to television and feature film production-syndication company Filmways in 1979, which was later acquired by Orion Pictures in 1982. Orion, along with the majority of the American-International (AIP)/Filmways holdings were then sold to the present incarnation of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1997. Following MGM’s re-introduction of the “Orion Pictures” name for current feature films and current television productions, the modern incarnation of MGM recently revived the “American-International Pictures” name for select theatrical releases/feature film productions.
Alongside “Destroy All Monsters” (1968), Arkoff and Nicholson’s American-International Pictures also handled the North American theatrical dub releases of the classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece, “Godzilla vs. Mothra” (1964, released under the title of “Godzilla vs. the ‘Thing’”) and Yoshimitsu Banno’s classic mammoth Toho Studios “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kaiju creature masterpiece installment, “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” (1971, released in 1972 by American-International under the title of “Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster”).
According to additional details from Rob Craig’s retrospective book on Arkoff and Nicholson’s American-International Pictures, “A Comprehensive Guide to American-International Pictures;” it was reported that the North American theatrical dub/theatrical release of Ishiro Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) was released in several markets as a double-feature presentation with another production. The second feature in the twinset was the American-International dub of Giuseppe Colizzi‘s Italian “Spaghetti Western” production of “God Forgives.. I Don’t” (1967/68) with Terence Hill, Bud Spencer and Frank Wolff.
It was reported that production of the classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) marked the final kaiju creture feature collaboration between the veteran director, veteran producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, veteran Toho Studios kaiju creature special effects supervisor Eiji Tsubyara and veteran Toho Studios source music score composer, Akira Ifukube- the trio had worked on numerous classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature feature masterpiece productions since the production of Toho Studios classic mammoth pioneering kaiju creature masterpiece, “Gojira/Godzilla” (1954, a.k.a. “Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” for the 1955 North American theatrical dub). The production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) marked the 20th kaiju/sci-fi creature feature film masterpiece production for Toho Studios of Japan; according to additional details from Rob Craig’s 2019 retrospective book, “American-International Pictures: A Comprehensive Filmography” and IMDB’s trivia section,
This will mark Sven’s second big broadcast of the U.S. dub of Ishiro Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) on the airlanes of Me-TV. He previously showcased the dubbed edition of Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production as a coast-to-coast big broadcast premiere back in April 2023.

Nakajima’s major breakout role was his role in the studio’s trademark title “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kaiju creature character suit for Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios pioneering kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Gojira”/”Godzilla” (1954, released in the United States as “Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” in 1956). After his appearance in “Gojira””Godzilla”/”Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” (1954/56), Nakajima made numerous appearances in the Toho Studios trademark Gojira/Godzilla kaiju creature suit role in 11 more of the studio’s classic mammoth “Godzilla”/”Gojira” kaiju creature masterpiece feature film productions from 1954-72. Haruo Nakajima made one final brief appearance in the trademark Toho Studios classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece characterization of Gojira/Godzilla as part of a photo shoot for Japan’s Uchusen Sci-Fi Magazine, according to rare home movie footage that was filmed in 1983 and was unearthed on YouTube in 2009.
Kenji Sahara previously appeared in a minor role in Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Gojira”/”Godzilla”/”Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” (1954/56). The veteran actor became one of Toho Studios’ leading actors shortly after his appearance in the role of Shigeru in Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Rodan” (1956) and appeared in numerous latter Toho Studios classic mammoth “Gojira”/”Godzilla” kaiju creature masterpiece productions and additional classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece productions for the studio. He later appeared in the role of Jun Manjomi in the classic mammoth Tsuburaya Productions supernatural masterpiece production of “Ultra Q” (1965-67). The Tsuburaya Productions series of “Ultra Q” was Japan’s answer to Rod Serling‘s classic mammoth CBS television supernatural masterpiece series, “The Twilight Zone” (1959-64).
Before appearing in numerous classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature feature masterpiece productions in his acting career, Masao “Little Man” Machan Fukazawa was previously one of Japan’s major professional wrestling champions; according to IMDB. One of Machan/Fukazawa’s earliest feature film appearances was in Senkichi Taniguchi‘s classic mammoth Toho Studios fantasy masterpiece production of “The Lost World of Sinbad” (1963, released by American-International in the United States under the title of “Samurai Pirate”) with Toshirô Mifune and Mie Hama. Machan/Fukazawa’s earliest Toho Studios kaiju creature film experience was in the role of Minira in Jun Fukuda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature masterpiece installment production of “Son of Godzilla” (1967) and his reprisal of Minira in Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature masterpiece production installment of “All Monsters Attack”/”Godzilla’s Revenge” (1969/71). Yû Sekita also appeared in the role of Sanda in Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “The War of the Gargantuas” (1966/70) and in the role of Mecha-Kong/Gorosaurus in the classic mammoth Ishiro Honda/Arthur Rankin Jr.-Jules Bass/Toho Studios/Universal Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “King Kong Escapes” (1967).
One of Yukiko Kobayashi’s earliest feature film appearances was in Ishiro Honda’s Toho Studios musical-comedy-drama production of “Come Marry Me” (1966), which turned out to be one of the few feature films that Honda worked on that did not specialize in his traditional “house genre style” of the kaiju/creature and sci-fi feature film genres. She later appeared in Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production entry of “Space Amoeba” (1970) with Kenji Sahara. One of Kobayashi’s final feature film appearances was in Michio Yamamoto’s classic mammoth Toho Studios horror masterpiece production of “The Vampire Doll” (1970).
“Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69): Additional insight into the “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature suit variant for Haruo Nakajima
It was reported that the trademark Toho Studios “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature suit that was worn by veteran stunt performer/actor Hauro Nakajima was changed/altered to give the star Toho Studios kaiju creature less of a menacing look with more of a “friendly heroic kaiju creature” to audiences. According to additional details from IMDB, the newer “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature suit that was worn by Nakajima for Honda’s production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69) contained a reduced version of the trademark kaiju creature character’s pupils, a round head, smaller dorsal fins, a re-designed mouth width and increased flexibility for the veteran actor/stunt performer during the production of “Destroy All Monsters.”
Ishiro Honda’s original pre-production vision for the Toho Studios production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69)
Veteran Toho Studios director Ishiro Honda had an original pre-production vision for his classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69). The veteran director wanted to have a greater emphasis on the details of the fictional Monsterland setting, primarily on how the kaiju creatures were developed in the fictional setting, along with numerous underwater-based sequences and the inner operations of the fictional land. Though Toho Studios production officials allocated a larger budget for Honda’s kaiju creature battle masterpiece installment, most of the veteran director’s proposals for the production of “Destroy All Monsters” were considered too costly and were scrapped from the production, according to additional details from IMDB.
It was also reported that Honda originally wanted to utilize the kaiju version of the character of King Kong again for his classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters.” However, it was impossible at this point- Toho Studios’ rights to license the “Kong” creature characterization from rightsholder RKO General (a result of General Tire’s then-acquisition of the RKO Radio Pictures library and properties in 1955 after industrialist Howard Hughes’ tinkering of the studio)* had expired.
Additional details on the original Toho Studios “Champion Festival” theatrical release of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968) in Japan
Honda’s classic mammoth 1968 kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” was originally considered as one of the finale features in Toho Studios’ “Showa Era”/“Golden Era” of classic mammoth kaiju creature feature film masterpiece productions. Because of the major box-office success of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968), Toho Studios officials decided to continue the studio’s trademark classic mammoth kaiju creature feature masterpieces under the new banner of the “Toho Champion Festival,” where the films were targeted towards family audiences throughout Japan.
According to film historian Stuart Gailbrith IV’s commentary with Steve Ryfle for the now-out-of-print Tokyo Shock standalone Blu-Ray edition of Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” and additional details from IMDB, Toho Studios’ “Champion” series of feature film presentations were released during the Winter and Summer Holidays and around March- as the school season in Japan began in April. The typical Toho “Champion Festival” series was three hours long- it consisted of a kaiju-based feature film, an anime featurette and a theatrical version of an episode of the classic mammoth sci-fi masterpiece series produced by Tsuburya Productions, “Ultraman.”
Some of the Toho Champion theatrical showcases also featured select theatrical re-releases of the studio’s classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpieces in Japan. The “Toho Champion Festival” theatrical series was also implemented as a cost-saving measure by the studio, as Toho Studios officials were concerned about the expensive budgets of the studio’s then-new classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece productions at the time.
The U.S. dubbed edition of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69): Supervised by an American-International production executive
When Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures acquired the United States theatrical rights to Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” in 1969, the dubbed edition was supervised by one of the executives of the production-distribution firm. According to IMDB, veteran American-International producer/production executive Salvatore Billitteri supervised the dubbing for the U.S. edition of “Destroy All Monsters.”
Some of the classic mammoth American-International feature productions and releases that Billiteri was involved in throughout his time with the company included the American-International dubbing of Mario Bava‘s “Planet of the Vampires” (1965) with Barry Sullivan, Norma Bengell, Ángel Aranda and Evi Marandi; William Crain‘s classic mammoth American-International vampire masterpiece production of “Blacula” (1972) with William Marshall, Vonetta McGee, Denise Nicholas, Charles Macaulay, The Hues Corporation/Karl Russell, H. Ann Kelley and St. Clair Lee and Elisha Cook Jr.; Bob Kelljan‘s classic mammoth American-International vampire sequel masterpiece production of “Scream Blacula Scream” (1973) with William Marshall, Pam Grier, Don Mitchell, Michael Conrad, Richard Lawson, Barbara Rhoades, Lynne Moody, Bernie Hamilton, young Craig T. Nelson and Arnold Williams and Stuart Rosenberg‘s classic mammoth American-International horror masterpiece production of “The Amityville Horror” (1979) with James Brolin, Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger and Murray Hamilton. Billiteri moved onto Filmways after Samuel Z. Arkoff sold American-International to the TV & film production-distribution company in 1979. He left the motion picture industry after Orion Pictures’ acquisition of Filmways and Orion’s acquisition of the majority of the American-International Pictures feature film & TV holdings.
Around the same time that American-International released the U.S. dubbing edition of “Destroy All Monsters” in 1969, Billiteri was also involved with the dubbing of another production from Japan that was produced by one of the competing studios to Toho Studios. The other production was the classic mammoth Toei Studios kaiju/sci-fi masterpiece series “Giant Robot” (produced by Toei from 1967-68). The U.S. rights were acquired by American-International for television syndication in 1969 and was syndicated to local stations under the title of “Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot” with the dubbing supervised by Billiteri. Several episodes of “Giant Robot/Johnny Sokko” were compiled into a feature-length TV movie edition by American-International under Billiteri’s supervision, titled “Voyage into Space” (1969). MGM, the current owners of the majority of the American-International/Filmways/Orion feature film & TV holdings still owns the U.S. rights to Toei’s “Giant Robot”/”Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot” and the made-for-TV syndication movie compilation, “Voyage into Space” (1969). -C.H.
Ishiro Honda’s “Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69): Showcased at a now-defunct drive-in theater near the home office of “Silver Screen Reflections”
Not too far from the home office/home headquarters of “Silver Screen Reflections,” the American-International dubbed edition of Ishiro Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “Destroy All Monsters” (1968/69) was showcased at a drive-in theater complex in Taneytown, Maryland. “Destroy All Monsters” was showcased at the now-defunct Monocacy Drive-In Theater in the town of Taneytown, Maryland, according to an original advertisement that was published in the July 1970 edition of The Frederick Post (News-Post). “Destroy All Monsters” was showcased as part of an American-International triple-feature presentation of the U.S. theatrical cut of the French Cocinor classic mammoth horror anthology masterpiece adaptation of selected Edgar Allan Poe short horror tales, “Spirits of the Dead” (1969); directed by veteran feature film directors Federico Fellini, Louis Malle and Roger Vadim and featured Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Alain Delon and Terence Stamp. The third production was Michael Reeves‘s classic mammoth American-International/Tigon horror-drama masterpiece adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Conqueror Worm” (1968, a.k.a. “Witchfinder General;” credited under the name of “Conquering Worm” in the News-Post/Monocacy Drive-In advertisement) with Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy, Hilary (Dwyer) Heath and Wilfrid Brambell.
The Monocacy Drive-In Theater was established in 1952 by John M. Miller, according to Cinema Treasures. The Monocacy Drive-In theater was later acquired by R/C Theatres. The Drive-In complex shuttered their operations in 1984. In 2007, it was reported that another Drive-In cinema complex was slated to open on the grounds of the former Monocacy Drive-In; yet the plans for the replacement Drive-In theater never materialized.
