Fellow Svengoolie SvenPals everywhere will be dancing and jumping for joy for his upcoming big broadcast of a classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi/stop-motion creature masterpiece.
“Svengoolie” presents his big broadcast of “The Black Scorpion” (1957)
A moment from Edward Ludwig’s classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece production of “The Black Scorpion” (1957).
The legendary and iconic Berwyn/Chicago-based classic mammoth sci-fi creature feature film masterpiece host will present his big broadcast of “The Black Scorpion” (1957), this Sat.; Aug. 12 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
The 1957 classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece production of “The Black Scorpion” was directed by veteran director Edward Ludwig. Before Ludwig worked on “The Black Scorpion,” he directed several features for Herbert J. Yates’ Republic Pictures, including the classic mammoth wartime drama masterpiece with John Wayne, Susan Hayward and a pre-“I Love Lucy”/”My Three Sons/Binge the Cringe” William Frawley, “The Fighting Seabees” (1944). Ludwig also directed the classic mammoth Republic Pictures action-adventure masterpiece feature with Wayne, Gail Russell and Gig Young; “Wake of the Red Witch” (1948).
The classic mammoth 1957 Warner Bros. sci-fi/creature masterpiece production was produced by veteran producers Jack Dietz and Frank Melford; Dietz previously produced the Eugène Lourié–Ray Harryhausen-Warner Bros. mammoth stop-motion creature masterpiece with Paula Raymond, Paul Hubschmid/Paul Christian, Cecil Kellaway, Kenneth Tobey and young Lee Van Cleef; “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms” (1953). Melford previously produced Leslie Goodwins’ RKO Radio Pictures feature comedy adaptation of the “Lum and Abner” radio series with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and a pre-“Perry Mason” Barbara Hale, “Goin’ To Town” (1944). Ludwig’s classic sci-fi creature production was produced for Warners under the moniker of Amex Productions.
According to the Shout! Factory/Ballyhoo Productions supplemental documentary on “The Black Scorpion” for the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” DVD edition of the 1957 classic Warner Bros. stop-motion sci-fi creature masterpiece; “Stinger of Death: Making of The Black Scorpion” (2013), Edward Ludwig’s feature was not filmed on the Warner Bros. studio backlot in Burbank, California. Because of Ludwig’s interest in travel/location filming, he decided to film the Warners production of “The Black Scorpion” on location in Mexico. According to IMDB, the majority of exterior scenes for Ludwig’s production of “The Black Scorpion” for Warners was filmed on location in Mexico City, Mexico and at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario stadium complex at the Ciudad Universitaria (University City) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).
The stop-motion creature effects for Ludwig’s 1957 classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece production were supervised by veteran stop-motion animators Willis H. O’Brien, Wah Chang and Peter “Pete” Peterson. O’Brien previously worked on the stop-motion visual effects for the classic mammoth Ernest B. Schoedsack–Merian C. Cooper-RKO Radio Pictures stop-motion creature masterpiece, “King Kong” (1933) and for the two classic mammoth RKO “Kong” masterpiece follow-up films, “Son of Kong” (1933) and “Mighty Joe Young” (1949, which was co-produced by veteran director John Ford as part of a production-distribution deal with RKO and then-owner of the studio at the time, business tycoon Howard Hughes); the aforementioned 1949 RKO production was one of the first major stop-motion film assignments for young Ray Harryhausen, who worked as a first technician under O’Brien. Three years after the production of “The Black Scorpion” (1957), Wah Chang worked with veteran special effects technician Marcel Delgado with special effects artists Tim Baar and Gene Warren on the classic Jack H. Harris–Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.–Universal Studios mammoth stop-motion prehistoric creature masterpiece, “Dinosaurus!” (1960). Peter “Pete” Peterson previously worked with O’Brien and young Harryhausen on “Mighty Joe Young” (1949).
The screenplay for the classic 1957 Ludwig-O’Brien-Warner Bros. mammoth sci-fi creature masterpiece was written by veteran screenwriter David Duncan, who wrote the screenplay for George Pal’s classic mammoth Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) sci-fi adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine” (1960, with Rod Taylor) and Robert Blees, who wrote the screenplay for George McCowan’s American-International Pictures cult classic sci-fi thriller masterpiece, “Frogs” (1972) with Ray Milland, Sam Elliott and Joan Van Ark and co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Fuest for his classic mammoth American-International “Dr. Phibes” sequel masterpiece featuring Vincent Price, “Dr. Phibes Rises Again” (1972). Duncan and Blees’ screenplay for “The Black Scorpion” (1957) was adapted for the screen from screenwriter Paul Yawitz’s original story treatment.
This will mark Sven’s second big broadcast of Ludwig’s classic mammoth 1957 Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece production on the airlanes of Me-TV. He previously showcased “The Black Scorpion” (1957) as a big broadcast premiere back in Feb. 2021.

Additional details on the studio lot in Mexico that was used for interior scenes in Warners’ “The Black Scorpion” (1957)
According to the American Film Institute (AFI)’s database portal on Edward Ludwig’s classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece production of “The Black Scorpion” (1957), it was noted that the interior scenes for Ludwig’s production were filmed at the Estudios Tepeyac/the Tepeyac Film Studios facility located in Mexico City, Mexico. According to the website Local.Mx and their retrospective article on numerous film studio facilities in Mexico, the Tepeyac Film Studios were constructed in 1946 near the Lindavista region of Mexico City, Mexico- home of the nation’s major feature film personalities of the era, including Maria Felix, Ignacio Lopez Tarso and Pedro Infante. The Lindavista town region of Mexico City was Mexico’s equivalent to Beverly Hills, California.
It was noted that over 150+ feature film productions were produced at the Tepeyac Studios during the existence of the studio complex. “The Black Scorpion” was one of the final feature film productions at the Tepeyac studio complex for interiors, the studio shuttered their doors for good near the end of 1957. Today, the former Tepeyac studio complex now serves as a train repair depot for the public Subway system in Mexico City, the Talleres Ticomán Del Metro/Ticoman Subway Workshop.
“The Black Scorpion” (1957): Sound effects for the “scorpion creature” were recycled from an earlier classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi masterpiece production
According to additional information from IMDB. for the source “chirping” sound effect recording for the “scorpion creature” in the classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi masterpiece production of “The Black Scorpion” (1957), elements of the “chirping” source sound effect recordings were recycled from Gordon Douglas’ earlier classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece, “Them!” (1954) with James Whitmore, Joan Weldon, Edmund Gwenn, a pre-“Gunsmoke” James Arness and a pre-“Davy Crockett”/”Daniel Boone” Fess Parker.
It was reported that Warner Bros. studio executives wanted “The Black Scorpion” (1957) to have the same impact that the studio had with the earlier classic mammoth sci-fi creature masterpiece production of “Them!,” Ludwig’s production was partially inspired by Douglas’ earlier Warners sci-fi creature production; according to Jeff Stafford’s 2003 Turner Classic Movies online article on Ludwig’s classic 1957 sci-fi creature masterpiece for Warners.
Mara Corday and Richard Denning’s latter recollections of filming “The Black Scorpion” (1957)
According to additional details from Jeff Stafford’s 2003 TCM online article on Ludwig’s classic mammoth Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece production of “The Black Scorpion” (1957), both Mara Corday and Richard Denning later recalled their experiences of filming the Warners production in Mexico to horror/sci-fi feature film historian Tom Weaver. It was reported that both Mara Corday and Edward Ludwig did not get along well during the filming of the 1957 production in Mexico. She also recalled that local actors in Mexico who were hired for the Warners production of “The Black Scorpion” (1957) were not too fond of Ludwig, due to the director’s gruffness and often screamed loudly to the cast and crew. It was also reported that many of the actors/extras in the production sabotaged the equipment in protest of Ludwig’s attitude.
It was also reported that Richard Denning did not have an enjoyable experience during one of the lunch breaks for the production of “The Black Scorpion.” While eating a sandwich out of a box lunch combo near an on-location village in Mexico, Denning encountered multiple large flies that were clumped together in his sandwich- he noted that the flies were very thick and had to blow the flies away on his sandwich.
Warner Bros.’ promotional tie-ins for “The Black Scorpion” (1957) and double-feature screening with a Warners Rock-and-Roll revue feature in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
According to Oct. 1957 edition of Film Bulletin, Warner Bros. had numerous promotional tie-ins/gimmicks for the original theatrical release of “The Black Scorpion” (1957). Warners encouraged participating theaters from coast-to-coast to have custom “Scorpion” creature masks printed for theatergoers/attendees of the original theatrical screening of “The Black Scorpion” in their home city/town, which was based off of the original Warner Bros. theatrical poster art rendition of the “face” of the “Scorpion creature.” Custom leaflets were also printed for theatergoers, along with many “gimmick” suggestions for participating theaters, including local actresses hired as “mock nurses” to hand out smelling salts for patrons who were too spooked by the “Scorpion creature,” along with a mock “light switch gimmick” for nervous patrons in the theater who were afraid of the creature on-screen – it was noted that the “light switch” was entirely a “dummy light switch” that didn’t turn on the house lights in the theater- adding an extra “spooky” dimension to the original theatrical presentation of “The Black Scorpion.”
According to the Dec. 21, 1957 edition of the Gettysburg Times for the screening of “The Black Scorpion” (1957) at the Majestic Theatre in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; the Warner Bros. classic mammoth sci-fi creature masterpiece was presented as a double-feature presentation with Warners’ mammoth classic rock-and-roll revue masterpiece directed by Roy Lockwood; “Jamboree!” (1957), with legends Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Count Basie’s orchestra, Connie Francis, Dick Clark (of “American Bandstand” fame), young Frankie Avalon, Slim Whitman, Joe Williams, Buddy Knox, Jimmy Bowen, Jodie Sands, Charlie Gracie, and The Four Coins.
“The Black Scorpion” (1957): Later riffed on “Mystery Science Theater 3000”
33 years after the original theatrical release of “The Black Scorpion” (1957), Ludwig’s classic Warner Bros. sci-fi creature masterpiece was riffed in 1990 on “Mystery Science Theater 3000” with Joel Hodgson (as host Joel Robinson), Trace Beaulieu (as the vocal stylings of Crow T. Robot/as mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester), J. “Elvis” (Josh) Weinstein (as the vocal stylings of Tom Servo/as mad scientist Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Erhardt) and Jim Mallon (as the vocal stylings of Gypsy). The MST3K edition (ep. #113) of “The Black Scorpion” aired on the Comedy Channel (the predecessor to Comedy Central) on Feb. 3, 1990; according to the MST3K Info/Satellite News episode guide of classic MST3K episodes.
“The Black Scorpion” (1957) was one of the few classic mammoth major studio feature film masterpieces that were riffed in the original run of the MST3K series.

And for Jamie & all fellow Super SvenPals/Super Tooners/Super Jammers- “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1975) was once previously showcased in my home area of Frederick, Mayrland at the now-defunct Holiday Cinemas back in 1975! The Holiday opened in 1969 and was in operation until 2019. Unfortunately, a used car dealership now occupies the former Holiday Cinemas building. -C.H.
