“And it’s only the beginning!” Original 1966 Universal Studios exhibitors’ twinfold advertisement for “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” with Don Knotts and Joan Staley.
Don Knotts signed a five-year feature film contract with Universal Studios. It was reported that Lew Wasserman, who was the head of Universal’s parent, television production/syndication and recorded music powerhouse Music Corporation of America (MCA, Wasserman’s group acquired U.S. Decca Records in 1962 and along with U.S. Decca, Universal Studios) felt that Knotts’ earlier appearance in Arthur Lubin’s classic mammoth live-action/animated Warner Bros. feature film comedy masterpiece production of “The Incredible Mr. Limpet” (1964) was not promoted adequately by Warners; according to John M. Miler’s 2010 Turner Classic Movies online article on Rafkin’s 1966 production. It was also reported that Universal/MCA let Knotts pick his own screenwriters for his appearances in the studio’s slate of feature film comedies, Knotts preferred the team of Everett Greenbaum and Jim Fritzell; both Greenbaum and Fritzell coined the famous “Atttaboy, Luther!” phrase for the production. It was also reported that Andy Griffith also contributed to Greenbaum and Fritzell’s screenplay in an uncredited position. After the mammoth box-office success of “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken” (1966), Knotts appeared in other classic mammoth Universal comedy masterpieces; including Edward J. Montagne’s “The Reluctant Astronaut” (1967) with Leslie Nielsen, Joan Freeman and Jesse White; Alan Rafkin’s “The Shakiest Gun In The West” (1968) with Barbara Rhoades, Pat Morita and Jackie Coogan, Rafkin’s “The Love God?” (1969) with Anne Francis, James Gregory and Edmond O’Brien) and Rafkin’s “How To Frame A Figg” (1971) with Joe Flynn, Edward Andrews, Yvonne Craig, Elaine Joyce and Frank Welker.
