“The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944): A milestone for Ford Beebe in his film career

Ford Beebe’s 1944 Motion Picture Anniversary Party at Universal Studios.
Ford Beebe’s classic mammoth Universal “Invisible” monster/sci-fi feature masterpiece installment production of “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944) marked a milestone for the veteran director. According to the Feb. 1944 edition of Showmen’s Trade Review, Beebe was originally a journalist for the San Diego Sun newspaper and for the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) syndicate for newspapers from coast-to-coast. Beebe decided to leave his two previous positions with the San Diego Sun and the NEA in 1914, as he was interested in a position at the Los Angeles Herald newspaper.
During the same year that he planned to join the staff of the Los Angeles Herald, he was hired as a publicity director for Universal Studios. When Beebe joined Carl Laemmle‘s studio firm in 1914, the publicity department for Universal was not headquartered at the large Universal Studios (Universal City) Hollywood complex at the time- it was located at Universal’s Nestor studio complex at Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California. Because of Beebe’s success in publicizing Universal feature productions, he became a screenwriter for the studio within his first years at Universal and was promoted as a director in 1930. After freelancing for competing studios, he exclusively worked for Universal Studios as a director and associate producer beginning in 1937.
A party was held for Beebe’s 30th anniversary on one of the sound stages at the Universal Studios (Universal City) Hollywood lot with Alan Curtis, Andy Devine, Frances Langford, Lon Chaney Jr. and Jon Hall.

According to the American Film Institute (AFI)’s database entry on Ford Beebe’s classic mammoth Universal “Invisible” sci-fi/monster feature film masterpiece installment of “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944), the studio had some different plans for the production of Beebe’s 1944 production.
It was reported that Universal executives wanted Claude Rains to return to the studio to appear in the studio’s fifth “Invisible” sci-fi/monster feature film production for the role of Robert Griffin instead of the previous role of Jack Griffin/the “Invisible Man” that Rains portrayed in James Whale’s earlier classic mammoth Universal sci-fi/monster masterpiece adaptation of “The Invisible Man” (1933). It was reported that Rains was not interested in appearing in Beebe’s 1944 follow-up feature and studio officials chose Jon Hall for his second Universal “Invisible Man” feature appearance.

Ford Beebe’s classic mammoth Universal “Invisible” sci-fi/monster feature masterpiece installment of “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944) was known as the feature with the trademark “Invisible” visual effects of veteran Universal Studios visual effects technician John P. Fulton.
According to the Universal supplemental featurette hosted and narrated by film historian Rudy Behlmer, “Now You See Him: ‘The Invisible Man’ Revealed” (2000), for Beebe’s 1944 Universal “Invisible” production; Fulton and the Universal Studios cinematography and visual effects crew members perfected an advanced technique for Jon Hall’s Robert Griffin/”Invisible Man” characterization, combined with actual camera movement. It was noted that Fulton and the Universal visual effects/cinematographers’ advanced visual effects techniques for “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944). Veteran cinematographer Milton R. Krasner served as cinematographer for Beebe’s 1944 Universal “Invisible” feature production installment.

“A fine attraction for you!” Jan. 1945 advertisement for the now-defunct Regent Theatre in Littlestown, Pennsylvania and their theatrical showings of Ford Beebe’s classic mammoth Universal Studios “Invisible” monster masterpiece production of “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944) and William Castle’s classic mammoth Columbia Pictures mystery masterpiece adaptation of “The Whistler” (1944).
Not too far from the home office/home headquarters of “Silver Screen Reflections,” Beebe’s classic mammoth 1944 Universal “Invisible” monster/sci-fi masterpiece installment production was originally screened at a theater in the town of Littlestown, Pennsylvania- which is also not too far from the town of Hanover, Pennsylvania- a town that is known for famous pretzels, potato chips and other snack treats.
According to an original advertisement that was published in the Jan. 1945 edition of the Hanover Evening Sun newspaper, “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944) was showcased at the now-defunct Regent Theatre in Littlestown, Pennsylvania.
Littlestown’s Regent Theatre was established in 1925. According to Cinema Treasures, the Regent installed a Robert Morton 2-manual “golden voice” organ in 1928- around the same time that most movie theaters and movie theater circuits from coast-to-coast converted from showcasing silent to sound feature films; counting sound-on-disc (Warner Bros.’ “Vitaphone”) and/or sound-on-film (Western Electric, Fox’s “Movietone” and/or RCA). As of this writing, it is unknown what motion picture sound projection system process was installed in the Regent. Littlestown’s Regent Theatre was in operation until 1957. For many decades, the former Regent Theatre property later became home of the Littlestown Mason & Dixon VFW/Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Building/Memorial Hall.
