The legendary Chicago/Berwyn-based classic sci-fi/creature feature masterpiece film host will present his big broadcast of “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955), this Sat.; Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
The 1955 classic mammoth Columbia sci-fi/creature/thriller masterpiece production was directed by veteran editor-turned-director Edward L. Cahn. Cahn produced numerous short subjects for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) from 1935-49. He also directed the cult classic mammoth sci-fi creature masterpiece productions of “The She-Creature” (1956, with Marla English, Chester Morris and Tom Conway and “Invasion of the Saucer Men” (1957) with a pre-“Batman” Frank Gorshin, Gloria Castillo and Steven Terrell for Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures. Cahn also directed the classic mammoth United Artists/Vogue Productions sci-fi creature masterpiece entry with Ray “Crash” Corrigan, Shirley Patterson/Shawn Smith and Marshall Thompson, “It! The Terror From Beyond Space” (1958). Two years after the production of “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955) was completed, Cahn also directed another classic mammoth sci-fi masterpiece production for Columbia Pictures, “Zombies of Mora Tau” (1957) with Gregg Palmer, Allison Hayes (of 1958’s “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” fame), Morris Ankrum, Autumn Russell, Joel Ashley, Marjorie Eaton, Gene Roth, Leonard P. Geer and Ray “Crash” Corrigan.
Cahn’s 1955 sci-fi/creature entry was produced by veteran Columbia Pictures producer and studio production official Sam Katzman under his Clover Productions moniker; according to Clive Hirschorn’s retrospective book on Columbia Pictures, “The Columbia Story.” The screenplay and original story idea for “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955) was written by veteran screenwriter and science fiction author Curt Sidomak. Sidomak also wrote the screenplay for George Waggner’s mammoth classic Universal monster masterpiece, “The Wolf Man” (1941) with Lon Chaney Jr., Evelyn Ankers, Claude Rains, Bela Lugosi, Maria Ouspenskaya, Warren William and Ralph Bellamy.

“Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955) was originally released as a double-feature presentation from coast-to-coast by Columbia Pictures with the classic mammoth Ray Harryhausen–Charles H. Schneer–Robert Gordon-Sam Katzman-Columbia stop-motion creature/monster/sci-fimasterpiece, “It Came From Beneath the Sea” (1955)with Kenneth Tobey, Faith Domergue and Donald Curtis); according toa June 1955 article in Film Bulletin.

Alongside his various feature film and TV appearances throughout his screen career Richard Denning appeared with Lucille Ball in the classic mammoth CBS Radio network comedy masterpiece series, “My Favorite Husband” (1948-51), which served as the inspiration for Ball’s classic mammoth Desilu-CBS TV comedy masterpiece series with real-life husband Desi Arnaz, “I Love Lucy” (1951-57); according to Ian G. Stevens also appeared in an uncredited role as Alma Mater in Jules White’s Columbia “Three Stooges” comedy short with Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Shemp Howard, “Blunder Boys” (1955). Two years before appearing in “Creature with the Atom Brain,” Stevens previously appeared in the uncredited role of Jean in Fred Zinnemann’s classic mammoth Columbia Pictures award-winning wartime drama masterpiece adaptation of “From Here to Eternity” (1955) with Burt Lancaster, Donna Reed, Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift and young Ernest Borgnine. According to IMDB‘s trivia section on the classic mammoth Columbia Pictures sci-fi creature/thriller masterpiece production, Edward L. Cahn’s production of “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955) was made on an economical budget. It was reported that during the production, Cahn decided to complete the production on schedule with minimal multiple editing techniques in the post-production process. His intention for this was to avoid tedious head shot sequences, where the majority of the players in the film were standing or sitting.

Cahn’s classic mammoth Columbia sci-fi/fantasy creature-thriller masterpiece production of “Creature with the Atom Brain” was noted as one of the early productions that mentioned the use of nuclear power in the creation of artificial brains in the story concept, according to Jeff Stafford’s Sept. 2006 Turner Classic Movies online article on Cahn’s production. For the original theatrical release of Cahn’s classic mammoth Columbia sci-fi thriller/creature masterpiece production of “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955); publicity officials from Columbia Pictures encouraged participating theaters to have promotional tie-ins to promote the production to interested theatergoers.
According to a rare, original 1955 Columbia Pictures exhibitors’ booklet for “Creature with the Atom Brain” that was recently unearthed on the classic mammoth sci-fi/horror feature film masterpiece appreciation site, From Zombos Closet; studio officials encouraged participating theaters from coast-to-coast to have a “Creature With the Atom Brain” mask cutout. Inspired by the original 1955 Columbia theatrical poster art design element, studio publicity officials encouraged local theaters from coast-to-coast to team up with regional printers to print the “Creature” illustration in “fluorescent green” to simulate a “glowing” creature. Columbia also encouraged theaters to have managers and/or local-regional actors to portray the “Creature with the Atom Brain” outside theaters to distribute the creature mask cutouts to interest theatergoers, along with distribution of the 1955 Columbia “creature” mask cutouts at schools and libraries to interest students.
“Creature with the Atom Brain” tie-in essay contests were also held from coast-to-coast for interested students. It was reported that students who wrote the winning essays on the topic of the “Creature with the Atom Brain” from coast-to-coast were awarded with complimentary tickets to their local theater for the original Columbia theatrical screening of Cahn’s classic mammoth 1955 sci-fi masterpiece, along with prizes of science-based merchandise/gadgets as a tie-in with local merchants. A “Creature with the Atom Brain” coloring contest was also held in conjunction with local newspapers and local art supply stores, winning participants were awarded with complimentary tickets to the film and gifts from local merchants from coast-to-coast.

For the original 1955 Columbia Pictures double-feature theatrical release of “Creature with the Atom Brain” and “It Came from Beneath the Sea,” an outdoor promotional stunt was held for the original theatrical release at the now-defunct Stanton Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; according to the August 1955 edition of Motion Picture Exhibitor. An idea of then-Stanton Theatre manager Al Plough, an “outdoor preview” screening of the Columbia theatrical trailers for “Creature with the Atom Brain” and “It Came from Beneath the Sea,” plus a “homemade” trailer that was projected in an alley that was next to the theater. It was reported that Plough also had a record cut at Philadelphia radio station WIP for one of the station’s personalities to provide prerecorded announcements for the outdoor promotional gimmick.
Plough also borrowed a 16mm film projector from the United States Navy/Philadelphia Naval Yard to project the Columbia double-feature trailers and the homemade trailer in the alley. It was reported that the Stanton management won $600 as part of a cash prize for the promotional gimmick, a combined total of $500 from Columbia and $100 as part of a “Showmanship Sweepstakes” from the publishers of Motion Picture Exhibitor.

Presented as part of a selection of “digest” versions of classic mammoth Columbia monster, creature and/or sci-fi masterpiece productions, it was handled by veteran Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems promotional and licensing head “Honest” Ed Justin. “Chicago Syndicate!” There should also be a “Berwyn” Syndicate! Original Columbia Pictures exhibitors’ trade ad for part of the studio’s 1955 slate of theatrical releases, including “Creature with the Atom Brain,” “Chicago Syndicate” and “It Came from Beneath the Sea.”
Edward L. Cahn’s classic mammoth Columbia sci-fi masterpiece production of “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955) is also available on Blu-Ray disc, sourced from Columbia/Sony’s recent High-Definition restoration as part of Arrow Films’ classic mammoth Columbia 1950s sci-fi creature/monster masterpiece film compilation box set, “Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman” (by arrangement with Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc./Sony Pictures Enteratinment/Sony Pictures Home Entertainment). The classic mammoth 1955 Cahn-Katzman-Columbia sci-fi masterpiece will also be part of Mill Creek Entertainment’s Blu-Ray disc anthology set of classic mammoth Columbia sci-fi feature film masterpieces from Columbia/Sony’s recent High-Definition restoration, “Sci-Fi From the Vault: 4 Classic Films,” which will be released on Feb. 14/Valentine’s Day, 2023 (by arrangement with Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc./Sony Pictures Entertainment/Sony Pictures Home Entertainment).
