“Svengoolie” presents his big broadcast of “King Kong Escapes” (1967)
Original Toho Studios theatrical trailer for the Japanese theatrical release of Ishirô Honda’s classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece, “King Kong Escapes” (1967). Universal Studios handled the North American theatrical release of Honda’s production.
The legendry Berwyn/Chicago-based creature film host will present his big broadcast of “King Kong Escapes” (1967) this Sat., May 22 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
Co-produced by Toho Studios of Japan and released in the states by Universal Studios, the classic 1967 mammoth kaiju creature feature film masterpiece was directed by veteran Toho Studios director Ishirô Honda, who received screen credit in the film under the name of Inoshiro Honda. Honda’s best known classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece productions for Toho Studios of Japan include “Gojira”/”Godzilla” (1954, released/re-purposed in 1956 as “Godzilla: King of the Monsters!” in the United States with Raymond Burr in the North American dub); “Rodan“ (1956), “Mothra” (1961), “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962), “Mothra vs. Godzilla” (1964, released in the United States by Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures under the title of “Godzilla vs. the Thing”), “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster” (1964), “Frankenstein vs. Baragon” (1965), “The War of the Gargantuas” (1966), “Destroy All Monsters” (1968), “All Monsters Attack” (1969, a.k.a. “Godzilla’s Revenge”) and “Terror of Mechagodzilla” (1975).
Honda’s classic 1967 Toho Studios/Universal mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece was produced by veteran Toho Studios producer Tomoyuki Tanaka. Alongside producing the majority of Honda’s classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece productions, Tanaka also served as producer for Akira Kurosawa’s classic mammoth Japanese samurai drama masterpiece with Toshirô Mifune for Toho Studios, “Yojimbo” (1961). The North American dub of “King Kong Escapes” was produced for Universal Studios by veteran producer Arthur Rankin Jr. Rankin was known for working with veteran producer Jules Bass on their numerous classic mammoth “Animagic” stop-motion animation holiday television and feature film productions under the name of Rankin/Bass Productions (a.k.a. “Videocraft International”), including “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (1964) and their classic mammoth Halloween/horror/comedy stop-motion Animagic feature film masterpiece released through Joseph E. Levine’s Embassy Pictures with the vocal characterizations of silver screen horror legend Boris Karloff and comedian legend Phyllis Diller, “Mad Monster Party?” (1967). The North American dub of “King Kong Escapes” (1967) was a joint collaboration between Toho Studios of Japan, Rankin/Bass Productions and Universal Studios.
The screenplay for Honda’s classic mammoth 1967 kaiju creature masterpiece was written by veteran Toho Studios screenwriter Takeshi Kimura, who received screen credit under the pseudonym of Kaoru Mabuchi. Kimura previously wrote the screenplay for Ishirô Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios sci-fi/mystery masterpiece, “The H-Man” (1958, released theatrically in the United States by Columbia Pictures). Mabuchi also wrote the screenplay for the latter Toho Studios classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpieces, including “Destroy All Monsters” (1968, under the pseudonym of Mabuchi), “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” (1971, Mabuchi), “Godzilla vs. Gigan” (1972) and “Godzilla vs. Megalon” (1973).
Kimura’s screenplay was partially inspired by screenwriter Edgar Wallace. Wallace wrote the screenplay for the original Ernest B. Schoedsack– Merian C. Cooper–Willis O’Brien–David O. Selznick–RKO Radio Pictures* classic mammoth stop-motion creature/fantasy masterpiece, “King Kong” (1933), which featured Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Noble Johnson, Victor Wong, Bruce Cabot, Frank Reicher and the “eighth wonder of the world,” Kong!
This will mark Svengoolie’s fourth big broadcast of Ishirô Honda’s classic mammoth 1967 Toho Studios/Universal kaiju creature masterpiece production on Me-TV. He previously showcased “King Kong Escapes” (1967) back in June 2013 (as a big coast-to-coast broadcast premiere), Jan. 2014 and Jan. 2016 (Fun Fact: I recall that Sven’s big Jan. 2016 Me-TV broadcast of “King Kong Escapes” was shown on my 28th Birthday back on Jan. 16, 2016)! –C.H.
Who was in Ishirô Honda’s classic Toho Studios/Universal Studios mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece production of “King Kong Escapes” (1967)?
The players who appeared in Ishirô Honda’s classic Toho Studios/Universal mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece production of “King Kong Escapes” (1967) were veteran stunt performer Haruo Nakajima (in the “King Kong” suit), Yû Sekita (in the Mecha-Kong/Gorosaurus suits), Rhodes Reason (as Cmdr. Carl Nelson), Mie Hama (as Madame Piranha, a.k.a. “Madame X”**), Linda Miller (as Lt. Susan Watson), Akira Takarada (as Lt. Cmdr. Jiro Nomura), Hideyo Amamoto (as Dr. Who***), credited under the name of Eisei Amamoto), Yoshifumi Tajima, Shôichi Hirose, Susumu Kurobe, Nadao Kirino, Tôru Ibuki and Kazuo Suzuki (as henchmen); Yasuhisa Tsutsumi (as a General), Ikio Sawamura (as a Mondo Islander), Tadashi Okabe and Seishirô Kuno (as soldiers); Andrew Hughes (as a United Nations reporter), the vocal stylings of Paul Frees (for the dubbing of Hideyo/Eisei Amamoto’s characterization of Dr. Who***), the vocal stylings of Julie Bennett (for the dubbing of various characters) and the vocal stylings of David de Keyser (for the dubbing of various characters).
Veteran Toho Studios actor/stunt performer Haruo Nakajima appeared in the iconic Gojira/Godzilla suit role in 12 of the studio’s classic kaiju creature masterpieces from 1954-72. Nakajima also played the suit roles of other iconic Toho Studios kaiju creature characters in the studio’s classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpieces, including “Rodan” (1956, a.k.a. “Radon”), “Mothra” (1961) and the Magma creature in Honda’s classic mammoth sci-fi/creature masterpiece for Toho Studios, “Gorath” (1962). In addition to his kaiju creature suit roles, Nakajima previously played the role of a bandit in Akira Kurosawa’s classic mammoth critically-acclaimed Toho Studios samurai-drama masterpiece with Toshirô Mifune, “Seven Samurai” (1954). Yû Sekita later appeared in the Gabara kaiju creature suit character in Honda’s classic Toho Studios mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece production of “All Monsters Attack” (1969).
Linda Miller later appeared in the role of a nurse in Kinji Fukasaku’s classic mammoth Toei Co., Ltd./Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) sci-fi/creature masterpiece, “The Green Slime” (1968, with Robert Horton, Luciana Paluzzi and Richard Jaeckel). The same year that she appeared in “King Kong Escapes,” Mie Hama also appeared in the role of Kissy in Lewis Gilbert’s classic mammoth United Artists spy adventure/action screen masterpiece adaptation of Ian Fleming’s “James Bond”/007” spy novel series entry with Sean Connery, “You Only Live Twice” (1967). In addition to his numerous film and TV roles throughout his acting career, Rhodes Reason later appeared in the role of Flavius in the 1969 episode of Gene Roddenberry’s classic Paramount/NBC mammoth sci-fi masterpiece series with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, James Doohan and Walter Koenig, “Star Trek” (the Original Series); “Bread and Circuses.” Paul Frees was known for his numerous narrations and voice-overs for film, television and animated productions, including the vocal stylings of Boris Badenov for Jay Ward’s classic mammoth animated cartoon masterpiece series, “Rocky and His Friends” (a.k.a. “Rocky and Bullwinkle”) from 1959-61 and the original voice of the stop-motion “Pillsbury Doughboy” for Pillsbury’s television commercials from 1965 until his death in 1986. Julie Bennett was known for her numerous voice-over roles in cartoons, including the voices of Agatha and Emily – The Two-headed Vulture in Chuck Jones’ classic mammoth Warner Bros. Bugs Bunny cartoon masterpiece, “Transylvania 6-5000” (1963).
Toho Studios & Universal Studios’ earlier “Kong” classic kaiju creature battle masterpiece
Four years before Toho Studios’ production of “King Kong Escapes” (1967), Universal Studios acquired the North American theatrical releasing rights to Ishirô Honda’s earlier classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece, “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962, with the Universal segments directed by Thomas Montgomery; the Universal dub was released in the United States in 1963).
Honda’s 1962 classic Toho Studios-Universal mammoth kaiju creature battle masterpiece featured Haruo Nakajima, Michael Keith, Mie Hama, Kenji Sahara, Harry Holcombe, Shôichi Hirose and James Yagi. The North American dub of “King Kong vs. Godzilla” was produced by veteran Universal producer John Beck. According to Turner Classic Movies’ online trivia section on “King Kong Escapes” (1967), the latter classic Toho Studios-Universal Studios mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece was not a direct sequel to “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962).
“King Kong Escapes” (1967): Part of a “Kong” package deal for Rankin/Bass & the “Kong” concept script
According to Gary Teetzel’s Jan. 2006 Turner Classic Movies online article on the classic Toho Studios-Universal Studios “Kong” kaiju creature masterpieces, for “King Kong Escapes” (1967); Arthur Rankin Jr. made arrangements with RKO General (successor to the former RKO Radio Pictures)* to develop an animated “King Kong” Sat. morning cartoon series.
The aforementioned Rankin/Bass “King Kong” animated creature-action cartoon series aired on the ABC television network from 1966-69, according to IMDB. As part of RKO General* and Rankin/Bass’ “Kong” deal, the entertainment/broadcasting firm wanted a new live-action “King Kong” feature film production. Since Rankin/Bass-Videocraft had a working relationship with animators in Japan for the majority of the company’s classic stop-motion “Animagic” and traditional animated masterpieces, the junior Rankin announced a partnership with Japan’s Toho Studios for the 1967 classic live-action mammoth kaiju creature “Kong” masterpiece. An original working title concept script for the 1967 “Kong” production was titled “Operation Robinson Crusoe.” The junior Rankin felt that the title of “Operation Robinson Crusoe” did not fit the “Kong” concept. A new script was written under the title of “King Kong Escapes” and the “Operation Robinson Crusoe” script was re-worked for “Ebirah, Horror of the Deep”/“Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster” (1966/69).
Two different “King Kong” costume variations for Haruo Nakajima in “King Kong Escapes” (1967)
Veteran Toho Studios stunt performer/actor Haruo Nakajima had to wear two different “King Kong” creature costume suits for Honda’s 1967 classic mammoth Kaiju creature masterpiece, according to additional details from Turner Classic Movies’ online trivia section for “King Kong Escapes.” It was mentioned that for Nakajima’s first “Kong” costume, Nakajima had to had onto sticks with his hands due to the heavy long-sleeved material; since the veteran actor/stunt performer could not reach the costume with his hands. A second “Kong” suit that was short-sleeved was constructed for Nakajima for the battle sequences in “King Kong Escapes.” Veteran Toho Studios special effects supervisor Eiji Tsuburaya worked on the special creature effects for Honda’s 1967 production of “King Kong Escapes.”
Universal Studios’ release of the Toho Studios-Rankin/Bass production of “King Kong Escapes” in connection to an anniversary of the celebrated creature of the silver screen
Ishiro Honda’s classic Toho Studios mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece production of “King Kong Escapes” was released one year later in the United States by Universal Studios in 1968, according to IMDB. According to an original 1968 Universal Studios exhibitors’ booklet for the theatrical release of “King Kong Escapes” that was recently unearthed on eBay, the studio released the North American dubbing of Honda’s classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece in 1968 for the 35th anniversary of the original 1933 RKO Radio Pictures* theatrical release of the classic “King Kong” mammoth stop-motion creature masterpiece feature.

*For the RKO/RKO General connection: General Tire acquired the feature film remnants of RKO Radio Pictures from business tycoon Howard Hughes in 1955; as the tire company was looking for additional feature film programming for their line of “General Teleradio”/RKO General TV stations at the time, the RKO features were also leased to C&C Television Corp. to non-RKO General TV stations around the same time under the “Movietime USA” package). Veteran broadcast/cable mogul Ted Turner acquired the rights to the RKO Radio Pictures library from General Tire/GenCorp/RKO General/Wesray in 1987; Time Warner (now known as Warner Media) merged with Ted Turner’s media/entertainment/cable properties in 1996; Warner Bros. owns the North American rights to the majority of the RKO library of feature films through the studio’s Turner holdings. The current incarnation of RKO Pictures (formed as an independent organization after the demise of General Tire/GenCorp’s RKO General unit and the tire conglomerate’s exit from entertainment/broadcasting) handles the copyright, trademark, script/re-make rights (co-productions with other studios for re-makes) and stage adaptation rights to the classic RKO features. –C.H.
**The character of “Dr. Who,” portrayed by Hideyo Amamoto in “King Kong Escapes” (1967) is not connected to the title character of the famous classic mammoth long-running BBC television sci-fi masterpiece series, “Doctor Who!” –C.H.
**The character of “Madame X,” portrayed by Mie Hama in “King Kong Escapes” (1967) is not connected to the Alexandre Bisson stage play of the same name, “Madame X;” including the three motion picture adaptations; Lionel Barrymore’s 1929 MGM adaptation with Ruth Chatterton, Sam Wood and Gustav Machatý’s 1937 MGM adaptation with Gladys George and David Lowell Rich’s 1966 Universal Studios adaptation with Lana Turner. –C.H.
