“Svengoolie” presents his big coast-to-coast broadcast premiere of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958)
Original 1958 Columbia Pictures theatrical trailer for the Ray Harryhausen–Nathan H. Juran Dynamation production of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad,” introduced by Kathryn Grant.
The legendary Berwyn/Chicago-based classic creature/fantasy film host will present his big coast-to-coast broadcast premiere of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958), this Sat.; June 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
The 1958 Columbia classic fantasy/adventure masterpiece was directed by veteran director Nathan Hertz Juran. Juran’s other fantasy masterpiece productions include “The Deadly Mantis” (1957), “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” (1958) and “The Boy Who Cried Werewolf” (1973). The stop-motion creature/visual effects were done by veteran pioneering stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen with his “Dynamation” stop-motion effects process.
Harryhausen’s other classic stop-motion visual effect feature masterpieces include “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms” (1953), “It Came From Beneath the Sea” (1955), “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers” (1956), “20 Million Miles to Earth” (1957), “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963), “First Men in the Moon” (1964), “The Valley of Gwangi” (1969) and “Clash of the Titans” (1981). Harryhausen co-wrote the screenplay with veteran film and TV screenwriter Kenneth Kolb.
“The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” was produced by veteran producer Charles H. Schneer, who frequently collaborated with Harryhausen’s features.
In Sven’s home area of Berwyn/Chicago, he previously aired “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958) as a Berwyn/Chicago big broadcast premiere on his hometown television station, WCIU-TV 26/”The U” back in March 2010, according to information from IMDB and in Jan. 2011 as a WCIU big broadcast; according to fellow super Svengoolie SvenPal David Fuentes’ official “Terror From Beyond the Dave” YouTube channel.
Who was in “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958)?
The players who appeared in the Ray Harryhausen-Nathan H. Juran Columbia classic Dynamation masterpiece production of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958) were Kerwin Mathews (as Sinbad), Kathryn Grant (as Princess Parisa), Richard Eyer (as Baronni the Genie), Torin Thatcher (as Sokurah the Magician), Virgilio Teixeira (as Ali), Harold Kasket (as Sultan), Nana DeHerrera (as Sadi), Alec Mango (as Caliph), Luis Guedes (as a crewman), Nino Falanga (as a gaunt sailor), Alfred Brown (as Harufa) and Danny Green (as Karim).
Kerwin Mathews later appeared in the Ray Harryhausen-Jack Sher classic Columbia Dynamation fantasy masterpiece, “The 3 Worlds of Gulliver” (1960) and Nathan H. Juran’s modern classic Universal werewolf monster masterpiece, “The Boy Who Cried Werewolf” (1973). Kathryn Grant was known for her numerous film, TV and stage roles including her appearance in Otto Preminger’s Columbia crime-mystery-drama masterpiece with James Stewart, “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959). She was known as the second wife of singer/crooner-actor Bing Crosby, they were married from 1957 until Bing’s death in 1977.
Insight into Ray Harryhausen’s “Dynamation” process for “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958)
According to details from the American Film Institute, Ray Harryhausen’s “Dynamation” stop-motion animated process was an enhanced version of his existing stop-motion creature figure/visual effects techniques; filmed against blue background composites which were then superimposed over existing live-action footage elements. According to Richard Schickel’s retrospective documentary on Ray Harryhausen, “The Harryhausen Chronicles” (1998); “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” was the first Harryhausen-Schneer feature-length stop-motion production collaboration in Technicolor. Most of the Dynamation creature creations for the 1958 Juran-Schneer-Columbia production were inspired by Harryhausen’s earlier “Sinbad” concept fantasy sketch drawing illustrations.
Kerwin Mathews’ training for his role of “Sinbad”
During the on-location filming in Spain for the 1958 Harryhausen-Juran-Schneer Columbia Dynamation production of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad,” Kerwin Mathews was trained by Olympic fencing champion Enzo Musumeci-Greco for the skeleton swordfight sequence; according to Jeff Stafford’s Turner Classic Movies online article on “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.” Months after filming the live-action sequences, Ray Harryhausen filmed his Dynamation skeleton figure frame-by-frame to the exact movements of the training footage between Mathews and Musumeci-Greco. The stop-motion Dynamation skeleton figure footage was superimposed over footage of Mathews’ “solo” fight, according to Mike Hankin’s “Ray Harryhausen – Master of the Majicks Vol. 2.”
Original inspiration for Harryhausen’s “Cyclops” Dynamation creature for “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958)
In addition to his pre-production concept illustration sketches, Ray Harryhausen’s inspiration for the Cyclops Dynamation creature for “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” also came from his earlier Cyclops-style prototype creation for the Ymir creature in his earlier Columbia production with Nathan H. Juran, “20 Million Miles to Earth” (1957); according to IMDB.
Ray Harryhausen and Charles H. Schneer’s additional Columbia “Sinbad” Dynamation/Dynarama fantasy productions
Ray Harryhausen and Charles H. Schneer produced two additional “Sinbad” Dynamation/Dynarama fantasy-adventure features for Columbia Pictures.
15 years after the release of “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad,” Harryhausen and Schneer produced “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad” (1973), with John Phillip Law, Caroline Munro, a pre-“Doctor Who” Tom Baker, Grégoire Aslan, Kurt Christian and Martin Shaw. The 1973 Harryhausen-Schneer-Columbia “Sinbad” entry was directed by Gordon Hessler.
Harryhausen and Schneer produced their final Columbia “Sinbad” Dynamation/Dynarama entry with “Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger” (1977), with Patrick Wayne (the son of John Wayne), Jane Seymour, a post-“Doctor Who” Patrick Troughton, Taryn Power, Kurt Christian and Bernard Kay. The 1977 Harryhausen-Schneer-Columbia “Sinbad” production was directed by Sam Wanamaker.
