The legendary Berwyn/Chicago-based horror film host will present his big FrankenFest broadcast premiere of “Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster” (1965); this Sat., Halloween eve/Oct. 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
“Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster” (1965) was directed by veteran cinematographer/director/producer Robert Gaffney. Earlier in his career, Gaffney served as an official producer for the United States Marine Corps-United States Navy pictorial short subject highlight film of President John F. Kennedy’s visit/review of the Atlantic Fleet at Naval Air Station Oceana near Virginia Beach, Virginia; “An Answer” (1962). Gaffney also served in uncredited positions as director of photography for two of Stanley Kubrick’s productions for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), including the director of photography for the second unit in Kubrick’s classic mammoth MGM drama masterpiece production of “Lolita” (1962) with Sue Lyon, Shelley Winters, James Mason and Peter Sellers and director of photography for the Monument Valley scenes in Kubrick’s classic mammoth MGM Super Panavision/Cinerama sci-fi masterpiece adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s “2001:A Space Odyssey” (1968). One year before “Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster,” Gaffney produced Theodore J. Flicker’s cult classic comedy production for Janus Films, “The Troublemaker” (1964) with Flicker, Tom Aldredge, Joan Darling, Godfrey Cambridge, James Frawley, China Lee, young Buck Henry and Michael Currie.
Gaffney’s production of “Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster” (1965) was produced by Robert McCarty, along with executive producer Alan V. Iselin and associate producer Stanley P. Darer. Throughout his brief film career alongside his only producing credit for “Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster” (1965), McCarty also directed a theatrical short documentary subject for Columbia Pictures four years earlier, titled “Rooftops of New York” (1961). The original story treatment and screenplay for Gaffney’s 1965 cult classic horror/monster/sci-fi masterpiece production was written by screenwriters R.H.W.
