“Lightning raises the Dead!” Original 1964 Universal Studios U.S. theatrical poster art for Hammer Films’ “The Evil of Frankenstein” with Peter Cushing.
The legendary and iconic Berwyn/Chicago-based classic mammoth horror/monster feature film masterpiece host will present his big expanded broadcast of “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964), this Sat., Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV.
The classic mammoth 1964 Hammer-Universal horror masterpiece production of “The Evil of Frankenstein” was directed by veteran cinematographer-turned-director Freddie Francis. Francis previously served as the cinematographer for Karel Reisz‘s Woodfall/British Lion romantic drama production of “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” (1961, released theatrically in the United States through the Walter Reade Organization’s Continental Film Distributors) with young Albert Finney (later of 1963’s “Tom Jones” fame and 1982’s “Annie” fame), Rachel Roberts, Shirley Anne Field and young Peter Sallis (also of 1961’s “Curse of the Werewolf” fame, later of BBC-TV’s “Last of the Summer Wine” fame and of interest to fellow Super Tooners/SvenPals of Toony & Bill’s “Toon In With Me”- the vocal stylings of Wallace in Nick Park & Aardman’s “Wallace and Gromit” stop-motion productions). He later servred as a cinematographer for David Lynch‘s classic mammoth Universal Studios/Dino DeLaurentiis sci-fi masterpiece adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” (1984) with Kyle McLachlin, Virginia Madsen, José Ferrer, Francesca Annis, Alicia Witt, Dean Stockwell (also of the original 1989-93 “Quantum Leap” series fame), legendary rock musician-singer Sting and Patrick Stewart (later of TV’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the Paramount “Star Trek: TNG” feature film adaptations and of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” fame). Francis later worked on the latter classic mammoth Warner Bros.-Seven Arts/Hammer “Dracula” vampire horror masterpiece screen entry with Hammer horror film legend Christopher Lee, “Dracula Has Risen from the Grave” (1968, released theatrically in the United States by Warners in 1969) and on the classic mammoth Warners creature-thriller masterpiece, “Trog” (1970) with Joan Crawford (Francis’ 1970 production marked Crawford’s final feature film appearance in her screen acting career), Michael Gough, Kim Braden, Bernard Kay and David Griffin (later of BBC-TV‘s “Keeping Up Appearances” fame).
The screenplay for “The Evil of Frankenstein” was written by veteran Hammer producer/screenwriter Anthony Hinds, who received screen credit under the pseudonym of John Elder; according to IMDB. Hinds also served as the producer of Francis’ classic mammoth 1964 Hammer/Universal masterpiece feature production. Three years earlier. Hinds co-produced with veteran Hammer producers Michael Carreras and Anthony Nelson Keys the classic mammoth Terence Fisher/Hammer/Universal werewolf horror masterpiece production of “The Curse of the Werewolf” (1961) with Oliver Reed, Yvonne Romain, Peter Sallis, Catherine Feller, Anthony Dawson, Hira Talfrey and Michael Ripper. Hinds also served as co-producer of numerous classic mammoth Hammer horror feature film masterpieces that featured Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, including “The Curse of Frankenstein” (1957, co-produced with Warner Bros.) “Dracula”/”Horror of Dracula” (1958, originally released through Universal/Rank in Great Britian and through Universal in the United States).
This will mark Sven’s fifth coast-to-coast big broadcast of “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964) on Me-TV. He previously showcased Francis’ classic mammoth Universal horror masterpiece production as a coast-to-coast big broadcast premiere back in Nov. 2013 and as regular Me-TV big broadcasts back in June 2014, March 2015 and Aug. 2019.
In Sven/Rich Koz’s home area of Berwyn/Chicago, he previously showcased “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964) as a Berwyn/Chicago big broadcast premiere during his WFLD/Berywn/Chicago days as the “Son of Svengoolie” back in Aug. 1982; according to IMDB.
Francis’ classic mammoth 1964 Hammer/Universal horror masterpiece was showcased again in Berwyn/Chicago during Sven/Son of Sven/Rich Koz’s WFLD Berwyn/Chicago days, only with Sven/Son of Sven’s bandleader; maestro Doug Graves/Doug Scharf back in 1985 (during Metromedia’s then-ownership of the station), according to a TV commercial for the 1985 WFLD Son of Sven/Doug Graves “Evil of Frankenstein” big broadcast that was unearthed by Berwyn/Chicago television archivist Rick Klein’s FuzzyMemoriesTV: The Museum of Classic Chicago Television. “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1963) later returned to the Sven/Berwyn/Chicago TV airlanes in 2006 on Sven’s hometown TV station, WCIU-TV 26; according to additional details from IMDB.
Who was in Freddie Francis’ classic mammoth Hammer/Universal horror masterpiece production of “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964)?
The players who were in Francis’ 1964 Universal-Hammer “Frankenstein” feature were Peter Cushing (as Baron Frankenstein), Ernest “Kiwi” Kingston (as Frankenstein’s monster), Peter Woodthorpe (as Zoltan), Katy Wild (as the beggar girl), Sandor Elès (as Hans), Duncan Lamont (as the chief of police), Anthony Blackshaw and David Conville (as policemen), David Hutcheson (as the Burgomaster), Caron Gardner (as the wife of the Burgomaster), James Maxwell (as the priest), Howard Goorney (as the drunk), Patrick Horgan (in an uncredited role as David Carrell), Tony Arpino (as a body snatcher), Jim Brady (in an uncredited role as a villager) and Timothy Bateson (in an uncredited role as a hypnotized man).
Peter Cushing instantly rose to fame for his numerous classic mammoth Hammer horror feature film masterpiece appearances with Christopher Lee, including “The Curse of Frankenstein” (1957), “Dracula/Horror of Dracula” (1958), “The Mummy” (1959), “The Hound of the Baskervilles” (1959) and “Dracula A.D. 1972” (1972). The same year that he appeared in “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964), Cushing reunited with Lee in Terence Fisher’s classic mammoth Hammer/Columbia Pictures horror masterpiece production of “The Gorgon” (1964) with Barbara Shelley and a pre-“Doctor Who” Patrick Troughton.
Ernest “Kiwi” Kingston was a professional wrestler in his home of New Zealand alongside his brief acting career; according to the official Twitter site for Hammer Films. His appearance in Fisher’s classic mammoth 1964 Hammer-Universal horror masterpiece marked one of his earliest feature film appearances in his brief acting career. Kingston’s other feature film appearances included Francis’ classic mammoth Hammer/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) mystery-thriller masterpiece production of “Hysteria” (1965) with Robert Webber, Anthony Newlands, Jennifer Jayne, Maurice Denham, Sue Lloyd and John Arnatt. Kingston made his final feature film appearance in Francis’ cult Amicus sci-fi feature production of “They Came from Beyond Space” (1967, released theatrically in the United States by Joseph E. Levine’s Embassy Pictures) with Robert Hutton, Jennifer Jayne, Zia Mohyeddin, Bernard Kay, Michael Gough, Maurice Good and Christopher Banks.
Alongside his numerous feature film and TV appearances throughout his acting career, Peter Woodthorpe later appeared in Francis’ classic mammoth Amicus-Paramount Pictures horror/thriller masterpiece production of “The Skull” (1965/66) with horror legends Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, along with Patrick Wymark, Jill Bennett, Michael Gough, George Coulouris, Paul Stockman, Nigel Green and Patrick Magee. Woodthorpe later provided the vocal stylings of Gollum in Ralph Bakshi‘s classic mammoth feature-length animated masterpiece adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s “The Lord of the Rings” (1978, originally released via United Artists) with the vocal stylings of Christopher Guard, William Squire, John Hurt, Norman Bird, Anthony Daniels, André Morell, Sharon Baird, Billy Barty, Jerry Maren and Terry Leonard.
One year after appearing in “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964), Anthony Blackshaw appeared in Sidney J. Furie‘s classic mammoth Rank/Universal thriller masterpiece production of “The Ipcress File” (1965) with Michael Caine, Sue Lloyd, Guy Doleman, Gordon Jackson, Frank Gatliff, Freda Bamford, Tony Caunter and Stanley Meadows. Katy Wild later appeared in the role of Lt. French in the war drama series, “Spyforce” (1971-72, co-produced by Australia’s Nine Network and Paramount Pictures). Ernest “Kiwi” Kingston was a professional wrestler in his home of New Zealand in addition to his brief acting career; according to the official Twitter site for Hammer Films.
“The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964): Peter Cushing’s characterization of Baron Frankenstein
![Peter_Cushing_The_Evil_Of_Frankenstein_1964](https://silverscreenreflex.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/peter_cushing_the_evil_of_frankenstein_1964.jpg?w=635&h=379)
Peter Cushing in “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964).
According to additional details from IMDB’s trivia section, it was reported that for Peter Cushing’s characterization of Baron Frankenstein in one scene of Francis’ classic mammoth 1964 Hammer-Universal horror masterpiece entry was cutting a head of cabbage.
During the filming of the sequence, this was originally done in order to present a simulated source “crushing bone” sound effect- yet was masked out with the source orchestral music score to avoid objections from Britain’s Film Classification system and the Motion Picture Association in the United States prior to the theatrical release.
It was reported that Cushing insisted on having technical advisors during the filming of “The Evil of Frankenstein-” he wanted to make sure that his character of Baron Frankenstein was using a scalpel in the correct manner. Cushing and the advisors also strived to use the correct medical terminologies to convince any persons of the medical profession who were in the audience during the original theatrical screening of Francis’ 1964 Hammer-Universal feature production.
“The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964): Known for utilizing a “Universal”-style “Frankenstein” monster look for Kiwi Kingston’s Hammer characterization of the Frankenstein character.

Original 1964 Universal Studios lobby card/publicity still for the Hammer co-production of “The Evil of Frankenstein” with Peter Cushing and Ernest “Kiwi” Kingston.
Since Universal Studios/MCA co-produced and co-financed Francis’ classic mammoth Hammer horror feature masterpiece adaptation of “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964), Hammer Films officials were finally given the approval from Universal to their trademark “Frankenstein monster” make-up design for Kiwi Kingston’s characterization of the monster in the 1964 Hammer/Universal feature production.
According to additional details from IMDB, it was reported that Freddie Francis’ classic mammoth 1964 Hammer-Universal horror masterpiece production of “The Evil of Frankenstein” marked the first time that a Hammer monster characterization had a resemblance to a Universal Studios monster characterization.
Kingston’s Hammer/Universal “Frankenstein monster” make-up appearance design was designed by veteran Hammer make-up effects artist Roy Ashton and hairstylist Frieda Steiger, inspired by veteran Universal make-up Jack Pierce‘s famed Universal “Frankenstein monster” design for horror legend Boris Karloff in James Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece feature film adaptation production of Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, “Frankenstein” (1931) with Mae Clarke, Colin Clive, Dwight Frye and Edward Van Sloan; Whale’s classic mammoth Universal “Frankenstein” monster sequel masterpiece production of “Bride of Frankenstein” (1935) with Elsa Lanchester, Clive and Una O’Connor and Rowland V. Lee’s classic mammoth Universal “Frankenstein” monster follow-up masterpiece production of “Son of Frankenstein” (1939, Karloff’s final feature film appearance as the Frankenstein monster); along with various classic mammoth Universal “Frankenstein” monster follow-up feature film masterpieces.
Years before the production of “The Evil of Frankenstein;” Hammer was forbidden to use the trademark Universal “Frankenstein monster” design in the company’s classic mammoth horror feature film masterpiece productions of “Curse of Frankenstein” (1957) and “Revenge of Frankenstein” (1958); since “Curse of Frankenstein” was co-produced and co-financed by rival studio Warner Bros., while “Revenge of Frankenstein” was co-produced and co-financed by rival studio Columbia Pictures.
The Hammer-Universal production of “Evil of Frankenstein” (1964): Released theatrically as a double-feature presentation with another classic mammoth Hammer-Universal thriller masterpiece

“A sensational combination opens to sensational business!” “In 32 theatre multiple launching- Chicago!” “Tops all the thrillers with thrilling boxoffice results!” Original 1964 Universal Studios exhibitors’ advertising leaflet for the U.S. theatrical double-feature release of the Freddie Francis-Hammer twinset of “The Evil of Frankenstein” and “Nightmare.”
According to an original Universal Studios exhibitors’ advertising leaflet that was published in the May 1964 edition of Motion Picture Exhibitor, Universal released Freddie Francis’ classic mammoth Hammer-Universal horror masterpiece production of “Evil of Frankenstein” (1964) in select cities throughout the United States as a double-feature presentation with another classic mammoth thriller masterpiece production that was also directed for Hammer and Universal by Francis.
The other classic mammoth Fisher-Hammer-Universal thriller feature masterpiece production was “Nightmare” (1964) with David Knight, Moira Redmond, Jennie Linden and Brenda Bruce)
“Evil of Frankenstein” (1964): One of several numerous Universal & Hammer-Universal features that were instantly syndicated to television shortly after the original theatrical release; plus the latter NBC network airing
![Original_1964_Universal_Studios_Lobby_Card_Publicity_Still_Hammer_The_Evil_Of_Frankenstein_Peter_Woodthorpe_Peter_Cushing_Ernie_Kiwi_Kingston](https://silverscreenreflex.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/original_1964_universal_studios_lobby_card_publicity_still_hammer_the_evil_of_frankenstein_peter_woodthorpe_peter_cushing_ernie_kiwi_kingston.jpg?w=607&h=524)
Original 1964 Universal Studios/Hammer lobby card/publicity still for “The Evil of Frankenstein,” with Peter Woodthorpe, Ernest ‘Kiwi” Kingston and Peter Cushing.
After the original theatrical release of Francis’ classic mammoth Hammer-Universal horror masterpiece production of “Evil of Frankenstein” (1964), the production was one of several then-current Universal and Hammer-Universal feature productions that were immediately syndicated to television by the studio. According to film historian John McElwee’s 2015 Greenbriar Picture Shows article on Hammer features, it was reported that Universal/MCA decided to do a “test-run” syndication package of 40 then-current Universal Studios features via Variety. This included “Evil of Frankenstein,” due to the fact that the select package of 40 were of then-current Universal feature productions that did not have a major box-office return. Universal/MCA officials decided that TV would be a larger advantage for the select Universal productions that did not do well theatrically. The test-run Universal/MCA syndication package was first offered to five of the NBC owned-and-operated TV stations in 1965 for airing as primetime movie specials on the five NBC-owned TV stations throughout the country in 1966.
Universal/MCA made another arrangement with the NBC television network- this time for a “network premiere” of “Evil of Frankenstein” (1964) from coast-to-coast in Jan. 1968; according to Broadcasting (Broadcasting & Cable). For the 1968 NBC TV network airing of “Evil of Frankenstein,” several additional scenes were re-filmed by Universal/MCA with additional players with scenes filmed at Universal Studios Hollywood (Universal City), California; according to additional details from IMDB. The players who appeared in the extra sequences for the NBC network version were Steven Geray, Maria Palmer, William Phipps and Tracy Stratford. To this day, the director of sequences for the NBC network version has not been revealed. Several additional scenes were unearthed on YouTube in 2011. After the NBC network edition/airing, Universal/MCA later offered “The Evil of Frankenstein” (1964) in their “123 Universal Features” TV syndication package to local stations from coast-to-coast.
It is most likely that the aforementioned 1966 NBC O&O’s airing of “Evil of Frankenstein” (1964) from the select 40-feature Universal/MCA test-run package might have aired on NBC-owned TV stations WMAQ-TV 5 in Berwyn/Chicago, Illinois and near the home office/home headquarters of “Silver Screen Reflections,” WRC-TV 4 in Washington, D.C./Frederick, Maryland. -C.H.
