“The Mole People” (1956): An economical Universal sci-fi creature feature production and additional insight into the “Mole” creature design
According to additional details from IMDB’s trivia section on Vogel’s classic mammoth 1956 Universal creature/sci-fi masterpiece production of “The Mole People” (1956); the filming of the production took approximately 17 days to complete- less than the typical Universal sci-fi/creature production of the era. It was also reported that stock newsreel footage of a mountain climbing expedition was utilized during the mountain-climbing sequence, according to the American Film Institute. To this day, it is unknown whether the stock footage came from earlier footage that was filmed by one of Universal’s newsreel field camera units. -C.H. According to Bill Warren’s retrospective book on classic mammoth sci-fi feature film masterpieces, “Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties: The 21st Century Edition;” it was reported that Virgil Vogel and William Allland were wondering about the overall costs of the creation of the “Mole” creature costumes for the production of “The Mole People.”
The “Mole” creature costumes were designed by veteran Universal Studios make-up and costume designer Jack Kevan. Kevan was best-known for co-designing the Universal “Gill-Man”/”Creature” monster for the studio’s “Creature from the Black Lagoon” classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece trilogy series with veteran Universal Studios costume and make-up artists Millicent Patrick and Bud Westmore and the “Metaluna Mutant” creature costume designs for Joseph Newman‘s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi creature masterpiece production of “This Island Earth” (1955) with veteran studio make-up and costume effect designers Chris Muller and Robert Hickman.
For “The Mole People” (1956), it was reported that Vogel and Alland were concerned about the budget that was allocated for the creation of the Universal “Mole” creature outfits for the stunt performers in the production- especially for the custom “rubber hump back” attachment for the stunt players. It was reported that Kevan revealed the estimated budget/costs for the creation of the custom materials for the “Mole” creature costumes.
As a cost-saving measure for Universal, Alland dropped Kevan’s custom “rubber hump back” attachment and suggested that old newspapers be put in place of the artificial hump creation that was originally proposed by Kevan for the “Mole” creature costumes.
“The Mole People” (1956): An unusual moment during the filming of Vogel’s Universal sci-fi production
During the filming of Virgil Vogel’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi masterpiece production of “The Mole People” (1956), it was reported that there was a mishap that occurred during one of sequences while filming. According to additional details from Bill Warren’s “Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties: The 21st Century Edition;” Vogel was satisfied with the first take of a fight sequence between the Mole creatures and the Palace Guard characters that were performed by veteran stunt performers.
The veteran editor-turned-director was watching the entire sequence from the camera crane. It was reported that Vogel was delighted by the take of the Mole creature fight sequence in his Universal production and suggested that the sequence that he filmed be printed and edited for the final cut of “The Mole People” prior to the original theatrical release.
After Vogel announced that the sequence was completed in “The Mole People,” assistant director Ronnie Rondell noted that there was something unusual that present in the fight sequence that was completed. He noted that there were old newspaper pieces all over the set from that fell out of the Universal “Mole” creature costumes from the stunt performers during the fight sequence. Vogel erupted in laughter at what happened after William Alland’s cost-saving suggestion to Jack Kevan’s Universal “Mole” creature costumes. The fight sequence was re-filmed without the use of old newspaper materials for the “Mole” creature costumes.
Universal’s promotional stunts for the original theatrical release of “The Mole People” (1956)
For the original theatrical release of Virgil Vogel’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi/creature masterpiece production of “The Mole People” (1956); the studio encouraged participating theaters from coast-to-coast to promote the 1956 production. According to a rare 1956 Universal Studios exhibitors’ booklet for “The Mole People” that was unearthed on the classic mammoth horror/monster/sci-fi feature film masterpiece appreciation site; From Zombos Closet, the studio encouraged local radio & TV stations to promote the local screening of “The Mole People” with local theaters within their city of license. Advertising copy was provided for local radio disc jockeys/announcers/personalities, while Universal also provided a custom “Mole People” TV advertising slide with the name of the local theater that was showing the feature. It was also mentioned that local TV stations who had a live panel discussion/talk show at the time were encouraged to invite local professors and scientists to talk about if there was life beneath the earth’s surface prior to the release of “The Mole People.”
Other promotional aspects by Universal included a “larger-than-life” cardboard cutout rendition of the original theatrical poster art element for “The Mole People” and for local theaters to team up with their local science fiction fan clubs for original theatrical screenings of Vogel’s 1956 classic mammoth Universal sci-fi creature production.
Virgil Vogel’s “The Mole People” (1956): Released as a Universal double-feature presentation with another classic mammoth Universal sci-fi creature masterpiece
Universal released “The Mole People” (1956) as a double-feature presentation with another one of the studio’s classic mammoth sci-fi/fantasy feature film masterpiece productions. According to an original 1956 Universal Studios exhibitors’ leaflet, “The Mole People” was released as a double-feature theatrical release with Curt Siodmak’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi/creature/fantasy feature film masterpiece production of “Curucu, Beast of the Amazon” (1956) with John Bromfield, Beverly Garland, Tom Payne, Luz del Fuego and Larri Thomas.
“The Mole People” (1956): Latter re-discovery on “Mystery Science Theater 3000”
Alongside latter television airings and home entertainment releases of Vogel’s classic mammoth 1956 Universal sci-fi creature masterpiece production, “The Mole People” was riffed on “Mystery Science Theater 3000” on the Sci-Fi Channel (pre-SyFy) back on Feb. 15, 1997 with host Mike Nelson, the vocal stylings of Bill Corbett as Crow T.
