Lamont also directed one feature in Universal’s classic mammoth “Francis the Talking Mule” comedy masterpiece series, “Francis in the Haunted House” (1956) with Molly the Mule as Francis, Mickey Rooney (in place of series regular Donald O’Connor), Richard Deacon (of TV’s “Leave It To Beaver” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” fame), young David Janssen (of TV’s “The Fugitive” and “Harry O” fame) and the vocal stylings of Paul Frees (in an uncredited as the “voice” of Francis, in place of series regular Chill Wills).

The original story treatment for “Abbott & Costello Meet the Invisible Man” (1951) was written by veteran film & TV writers Howard Snyder and Hugh Wedlock Jr. Both Snyder and the junior Wedlock previously wrote the original story treatment for Jean Yarbrough and Erle C. Kenton‘s classic mammoth Universal comedy masterpiece with Abbott and Costello, “In Society” (1944, alongside Abbott & Costello; with Arthur Treacher, Marion Hutton, George Dolenz– who was the real-life father of Mickey Dolenz of “Circus Boy” & “The Monkees” fame and Thurston Hall). Loosely inspired by elements of H.G. Wells’ 1897 literary work, Snyder and Wedlock’s original story treatment for the classic mammoth 1951 Universal “Abbott & Costello” monster-comedy masterpiece installment production was adapted into a screenplay by veteran screenwriters John Grant, Robert Lees and Frederic I. Rinaldo. Veteran Universal feature film & TV producer Howard Christie served as producer of the legendary comedic duo’s classic mammoth “Invisible Man” monster-comedy masterpiece installment. Christie later produced the classic mammoth long-running MCA-Revue-Universal TV western anthology masterpiece series, “Wagon Train” (1958-65).

The original plan for the proposed 1951 Universal production was going to be a regular sci-fi/monster film in the studio’s “Invisible Man” classic mammoth monster masterpiece series, originally under the title of “The Invisible Man Strikes Back;” according to IMDB and the American Film Institute (AFI) database entry on the classic mammoth 1951 Universal Abbott & Costello-“Invisible Man” monster masterpiece production. Because of the overall box-office success of the legendary comedic duo’s earlier classic mammoth Universal monster-comedy masterpiece, “Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein” (1948), Universal executives wanted Bud & Lou to be paired with a different characterization of the studio’s trademark “Invisible Man” monster characterization, at the suggestion of veteran Universal “Abbott & Costello” comedy feature producer Robert Arthur, according to Brian Cady’s 2004 Turner Classic Movies online article.

According to Brian Cady’s 2004 Turner Classic Movies online article on “Abbott & Costello Meet the Invisible Man” (1951), before going onto the vaudeville circuit where he met Lou Costello, Bud Abbott was originally an amateur boxer; who fought under the pseudonym name of Lou King. Earlier in his brief boxing career, Costello/King had won eleven rounds in a boxing tournament. His boxing career came to an end when his father secretly discovered about his boxing career, Costello’s father urged his son not to participate in any more boxing ring championships. For the famous “Invisible Man” boxing sequence with Lou Costello in “Abbott & Costelloe Meet the Invisible Man;” many of Costello’s boxing sequences were inspired by his previous boxing experiences.
24 years after the original Universal Studios theatrical release of “Abbott & Costello Meet the Invisible Man;” the non-profit Lou Costello Sportsmen Club, Inc. was established in Costello’s honor in the legendary comedian’s hometown of Patterson, New Jersey.

This was possibly done as a cost-saving measure by Universal and it was reported that the screenwriters carefully wrote elements to match the existing stock footage elements from the previous Universal production of “The Invisible Man Returns.”
