Marin later worked on western feature films for the remainder of his career, including the classic mammoth Warner Bros. western feature film masterpiece, “Sugarfoot” (1951) with Randolph Scott, Adele Jergens, Raymond Massey, S.Z. “Cuddles” Sakall and Arthur Hunnicutt; which later inspired the classic mammoth Warner Bros.-ABC TV western masterpiece series of the same name, “Sugarfoot” (1957-61) with Will Hutchins.
The classic mammoth 1942 Universal wartime sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent” was co-produced by veteran producer-director Frank Lloyd, who was known for directing the classic mammoth MGM Academy Award-winning adventure-drama masterpiece adaptation production of “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935) with Charles Laughton, Clark Gable, Spring Byington, Movita, Franchot Tone and Donald Crisp.
Veteran feature film & TV director-producer George Waggner served as an associate producer for Marin’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent;” Waggner previously directed the classic mammoth Universal werewolf monster masterpiece production of “The Wolf Man” (1941), with Lon Chaney Jr., Evelyn Ankers, Claude Rains, Bela Lugosi, Maria Ouspenskaya, Ralph Bellamy, Warren William and Patric Knowles and later worked on numerous episodes of the classic mammoth Twentieth Century Fox (Twentieth Century Studios)/ABC TV live-action “Batman” TV series adaptation with Adam West and Burt Ward (Waggner directed episodes from 1966-67).

John Launer, Michael Granger, Karl “the Killer” Davis, Gregory Gaye and Linda Bennett.’
Elements of Siodmak’s screenplay for the 1942 classic mammoth Universal wartime sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent” were partially inspired by H.G. Wells’ 1897 literary work of “The Invisible Man.”
“Invisible Agent” (1942) was produced for Universal by Frank Lloyd’s production firm, Frank Lloyd Productions, Inc.; according to the original 1942 Universal theatrical release trailer. This was one of the few instances that a Universal sci-fi/monster/creature feature film masterpiece installment production was produced by a producer’s production firm for the studio at the time.

“Invisible Agent” (1942): The fourth installment in Universal’s “Invisible” film series and original pre-production plans
Edwin L. Marin’s classic mammoth Universal wartime/sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent” (1942) marked the fourth film in the studio’s “Invisible” creature/”Invisible Man” feature film franchise series, according to film historian Rudy Behlmer’s findings in the Universal supplemental featurette on the studio’s classic mammoth “Invisible” feature film masterpiece productions; “Now You See Him: The ‘Invisible Man’ Revealed!” (2000).
This was due to to the successes of James Whale‘s earlier classic mammoth Universal monster/sci-fi masterpiece adaptation of “The Invisible Man” (1933) with Claude Rains, Gloria Stuart and Una O’Connor; Joe May‘s classic mammoth Universal “Invisible Man” monster/sci-fi sequel masterpiece production of “The Invisible Man Returns” (1940) with Vincent Price, Nan Grey, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, a pre-“Batman” Alan Napier, Cecil Kellaway and A. Edward Sutherland‘s classic mammoth Universal “Invisible” comedy masterpiece production of “The Invisible Woman” (1940) with Virginia Bruce, John Barrymore, Margaret Hamilton (of 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” fame), Shemp Howard (later of “The Three Stooges” fame), Charles Lane, Oskar Homolka and Charles Ruggles.
The original working title for Marin’s classic mammoth 1942 Universal wartime sci-fi masterpiece production was “The Invisible Spy,” according to the American Film Institute (AFI)’s database entry for “Invisible Agent.” It was also reported that Lionel Atwill was also considered for the role of Conrad Stauffer before Sir Cedric Hardwicke was cast for the role. It was also reported that veteran Universal producer Jack H. Skirball, who had also co-produced Alfred Hitchcock‘s classic mammoth Universal mystery-suspense masterpiece production of “Saboteur” (1942) with Priscilla Lane, Robert Cummings and Otto Kruger was originally slated to co-produce “Invisible Agent” with Frank Lloyd. Yet a conflict between the two veteran feature film producers occurred prior to the production of “Invisible Agent” and George Waggner was chosen as the associate producer for the 1942 production.
Academy Award-nominated visual effects for “Invisible Agent” (1942)
Veteran feature film visual effects/photographic effects supervisor John P. Fulton, who helped perfect the special effects for James Whale’s earlier classic mammoth Universal monster/sci-fi masterpiece adaptation of “The Invisible Man” (1933) worked on the special visual effects for Edwin L. Marin’s classic mammoth Universal wartime/sci-fi “Invisible” masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent.” According to the official Oscars website for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the AFI database entry on “Invisible Agent,” Fulton was nominated for the 1943 Academy Award in the field of special effects, along with veteran Universal sound effects supervisor Bernard B. Brown for their work on “Invisible Agent.” Both Fulton and Brown lost to the team of visual effects designers Farciot Edouart, Gordon Jennings, William L. Pereira, Jan Domela and Paul K. Lerpae and sound effects supervisor Louis Mesenkop from rival studio Paramount Pictures; the competitors won the 1943 Oscar for their special effects work in Cecil B. DeMille‘s Paramount production of “Reap the Wild Wind” (1942) with Ray Milland, Paulette Goddard, John Wayne, Raymond Massey and Robert Preston.
According to additional information from the Universal supplemental featurette, “Now You See Him: The ‘Invisible Man’ Revealed!” (2000); it was noted that Fulton’s “Invisible Man” visual effects were improved over the previous three classic mammoth Universal “Invisible” feature film masterpieces with advanced visual effects/advanced cinematography techniques of the time.
Universal’s “Invisible Agent” (1942): Released to the United States Armed Forces through the nontheatrical unit of a camera company during World War II
The nontheatrical distribution of Edwin L. Marin’s classic mammoth Universal wartime/sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent” (1942) was distributed to the United States Armed Forces through Chicago-based camera and motion picture equipment company Bell & Howell and their “Filmosound Library” of 16mm nontheatrical films during World War II, according to an original 1943 Bell & Howell advertisement that mentioned the 1942 Universal production as one of the major studio features in the Filmosound nontheatrical library. Bell & Howell’s nontheatrical Filmosound Library handled many major studio feature films/short subject/cartoons, along with the distribution of official United States military training films for the United States Armed Forces during World War II; according to an original 1944 Bell & Howell leaflet for the company’s Filmosound line of film projectors that were used in the military.
Promotional tie-ins for the original Universal theatrical releases of “Invisible Agent” (1942) in Washington, D.C. and New York City
For the original 1942 Universal Studios theatrical release of Edwin L. Marin’s classic mammoth Universal wartime-era sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent,” the studio encouraged participating theaters from coast-to-coast to have promotional tie-ins for the release. According to the Jan. 1943 edition of Motion Picture Herald, the historic Lichtman’s Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. had a customized “shadowbox” display for interested theatergoers for the original theatrical release of “Invisible Agent.” A silhouette “shadow” of a man holding a knife flashed every minute. THis was achieved with the use of a paper background, a strong light and a “flasher” device.
For the original theatrical screening of “Invisible Agent” at the now-defunct Loews’ Criterion Theatre near Times Square in New York City, theater management decided to promote the 1942 Universal production with a customized marquee display based off the original Universal theatrical poster art. According to the Sept. 1942 edition of The Exhibitor for the New York City premiere of “Invisible Agent,” it was reported that Loews management presented mock “Invisible Fish”*** in an ordinary “lobby fish bowl” in the lobby; along with a mock demonstration of an “invisible power” to interested theatergoers.
***Sidebar: The “Invisible Fish” is not connected to Me-TV’s Toony the Tuna and/or “Sventoonie” of “Toon In with Me” & “Sventoonie” fame! -C.H.
Jon Hall’s latter classic Universal “Invisible Man” masterpiece feature film appearance
Two years after the classic mammoth Universal wartime/sci-fi masterpiece production of “Invisible Agent,” Jon Hall appeared in another one of the studio’s “Invisible” productions; he appeared in the role of Robert Griffin in Ford Beebe’s classic mammoth Universal “Invisible Man” monster masterpiece production installment of “The Invisible Man’s Revenge” (1944) with Evelyn Ankers, Alan Curtis, Gale Sondergaard, John Carradine, Halliwell Hobbes and Alan Curtis; according to IMDB.
