Original Allied Artists* TV advertising trailer for the original theatrical release of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958), featuring Boris Karloff. Sidebar: This was a trailer prepared by Allied Artists* for local television stations from coast-to-coast, the TV trailer contained a 10-second “Frankenstein 1970” artwork/blank static art card slide.
The legendary Berwyn/Chicago-based classic monster film host will present his big broadcast premiere of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958), this Sat.; June 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central on Me-TV**.
The 1959 cult classic mammoth “Frankenstein” monster masterpiece production was directed by veteran producer-director Howard W. Koch. Howard W. Koch was later known as a producer/executive producer for the majority of his motion picture career, notably for Paramount Pictures. Many of his feature film successes included supervising two classic mammoth Paramount feature masterpiece adaptations of Neil Simon’s Broadway comedy plays, including Gene Saks’ classic mammoth Paramount feature comedy masterpiece adaptation of Simon’s “The Odd Couple” (1968) with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau (which also inspired the classic mammoth Paramount/ABC television comedy masterpiece adaptation of Simon’s “The Odd Couple” with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman from 1970-75) and Arthur Hiller’s classic mammoth Paramount feature comedy adaptation masterpiece of Simon’s “Plaza Suite” (1971) with Matthau, Maureen Stapleton, Barbara Harris, Lee Grant, Dan Ferrone and Jenny Sullivan.
During his time at Paramount, Koch also served as an executive producer for the classic mammoth Jerry Zucker–Jim Abrahams–David Zucker Paramount comedy masterpiece production of “Airplane!” (1980) with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Barbara Billingsley, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Julie Hagerty, Robert Hays, Leslie Nielsen, Lorna Patterson, Robert Stack, Stephen Stucker and “Otto.” Alongside his motion picture production duties, Howard W. Koch also produced numerous television broadcasts of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Academy Award ceremonies from 1972–73, 1975–76, 1978, 1980 and 1982–83.
The screenplay for Howard W. Koch’s classic mammoth monster/sci-fi masterpiece production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) was produced by veteran producers Aubrey Schenck and assistant producer Leon Spielberg. Schenck also co-wrote the original story treatment for “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) with Charles A. Moses; both Schenck and Moses’ original story treatment was adapted into a screenplay by veteran screenwriters Richard H. Landau and George Worthing Yates and was partially inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1818 gothic novel, “Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus.”
The same year that he worked on the production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958), Aubrey Schenck also served as the producer of William Castle’s classic mammoth Allied Artists macabre thriller masterpiece production with William Prince, Christine White, Jim Backus (of “Mr. Magoo” and “Gilligan’s Island” fame) and Jacqueline Scott, “Macabre” (1958). Leon Spielberg later served in an uncredited position as an assistant editor for Alan Gibson’s classic mammoth Hammer Films–Warner Bros. horror/monster/thriller masterpiece with British Horror legends Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Stephanie Beacham, Marsha A. Hunt, Christopher Neame and Michael Coles, “Dracula A.D., 1972” (1972).
Howard W. Koch’s classic mammoth sci-fi/monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) was released theatrically by Allied Artists*, according to IMDB.
Who was in Howard W. Koch’s Allied Artists* production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958)?
The players who appeared in Howard W. Koch’s classic mammoth Allied Artists monster/sci-fi masterpiece production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) were Boris Karloff (as Baron Victor von Frankenstein), Mike Lane (in the dual roles of Hans/Frankenstein’s monster), Jana Lund (as Carolyn Hayes), Don ‘Red’ Barry (as Douglas Row), Charlotte Austin (as Judy Stevens), Irwin Berke (as Inspector Raab), Rudolph Anders (as Wilhelm Gottfried), Norbert Schiller (as Shuter), Johnny Dennis (as Morgan Haley), Jack Kenney (as an assistant camera operator), Joe Ploski (as a station attendant), Otto Reichow (as an atomic reactor expert) and Franz Roehn (as a cab driver).
Karloff instantly rose to fame in the horror/monster/thriller genre for his classic mammoth Universal monster feature film masterpiece roles of Frankenstein’s monster in James Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece feature film adaptation production of “Frankenstein” (1931) with Mae Clarke, Colin Clive, Dwight Frye and Edward Van Sloan, Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece adaptation sequel production of “Bride of Frankenstein” (1935) with Elsa Lanchester, Clive, Una O’Connor, Valerie Hobson, O.P. Heggie, Ernest Thesiger and Frye and in Rowland V. Lee’s “Son of Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone and Bela Lugosi, Josephine Hutchinson, Donnie Dunagan, Lionel Atwill and young Ward Bond.
Karloff’s earlier classic mammoth pre-1948 Universal monster, thriller and horror feature film masterpieces were being discovered by new generations and being re-discovered through the Realart theatrical releases of the aforementioned Karloff Universal classic masterpieces and when Universal leased the TV syndication rights to their pre-1948 feature film library to rival studio Columbia Pictures’ Screen Gems TV unit around 1957, notably in the “Shock” film syndication package. The TV syndication rights to the classic pre-1948 Universal and the classic pre-1948 Universal/Karloff productions reverted back to Universal/MCA in the early 1970s. Around the same time that he appeared in “Frankenstein 1970” (1958), Karloff appeared in the classic mammoth Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)–Richard Gordon–Robert Day horror/thriller masterpiece production of “The Haunted Strangler” (1958) with Boris Karloff, Jean Kent, Elizabeth Allan, Anthony Dawson, Vera Day, Tim Turner and Leslie Perrins.
Alongside his appearances in numerous feature films and TV shows throughout his acting career, Mike Lane previously appeared in the role of fictional boxer Toro Moreno in Mark Robson’s classic mammoth Columbia Pictures boxing/film noir drama masterpiece with Humphrey Bogart, Rod Steiger, Jan Sterling and the senior Max Baer; “The Harder They Fall” (1956, which was Humphrey Bogart’s final film appearance before his death in 1957). Lane later appeared in the role of villain Daddy Longlegs in two episodes of the classic mammoth Twentieth Century Fox (Twentieth Century Studios)/ABC television live-action masterpiece adaptation of “Batman” with Adam West, Burt Ward and Alan Napier (Lane appeared in the 1967 ”Batman” episodes of “Black Widow Strikes Again” and “Caught in the Spider’s Den”). Alongside her numerous feature film and television appearances in her acting career, Jana Lund previously appeared in Fred F. Sears’ classic mammoth rock-and-roll revue masterpiece production “Don’t Knock the Rock” (1956, a sequel to the earlier 1956 Columbia-Fred F. Sears production of “Rock Around the Clock”) with Little Richard, Bill Haley’s Comets, disc jockey Alan Freed, Patricia Hardy and George Cisar and in the classic mammoth Hal Kanter–Hal B. Wallis-Paramount Pictures musical masterpiece production of “Loving You” (1957) with Elvis Presley (Presley’s 1957 RCA-Victor recording of the same name was released shortly before the film), Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey, James Gleason, Dolores Hart and Paul Smith.
Throughout her brief acting career in numerous feature film and television productions, Charlotte Austin later appeared in an episode of the classic mammoth CBS television drama masterpiece adaptation of Erle Stanley Gardener’s “Perry Mason” with Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale, William Hopper, Ray Collins and William Talman (Austin appeared in the 1960 “Perry Mason” episode, titled “The Case of the Gallant Grafter”). To paraphrase Sven, “Yes, Charlotte Austin was on.. ‘Perry Mason’!” –C.H.
“Frankenstein 1970” (1958): Aubrey Schenck’s formula for Howard W. Koch’s film
According to David Kalat’s June 2011 Turner Classic Movies online article on the cult classic mammoth Howard W. Koch/Allied Artists sci-fi/horror/monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958); it was reported that producer Aubrey Schenck was inspired by the success of competitors Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures (AIP) and their classic mammoth “Frankenstein” feature film masterpiece production of “I Was a Teenage Frankenstein” (1957).
Inspired by Arkoff and Nicholson’s successes for the drive-in theater market and the teenage audience market for their American-International (AIP) feature film masterpieces, Schenck wanted to emulate a similar “AIP formula” for Allied Artists’ original theatrical release of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958). Schenck also considered Boris Karloff as the main attraction for the production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958). During the pre-production phase, one of the original working titles for Koch’s 1958 production was “Frankenstein 1960.” Schenck considered that “1960” was a few years away and was not futuristic, settling for “1970” instead, according to IMDB’s trivia section.
An earlier “spook big broadcast” inspiration for Allied Artists’ production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958)
It was reported that Howard W. Koch’s production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) for Allied Artists was partially inspired by an actual “big broadcast” trick event that occurred six years before the production. According to Kristi Adams’ Oct. 2021 Stars and Strips article and additional details from Kalat’s 2011 TCM online article on the classic mammoth 1958 Koch-Allied Artists monster/sci-fi masterpiece production; Armed Forces Radio Network (American Forces Network) announcer Carl Nelson broadcast a special Halloween evening broadcast from the crypt of the “Frankenstein Castle” (Burg Frankenstein) location in 1952 near Odenwald, Germany (West Germany). It was reported that the producer of the AFRN/AFN Halloween Live remote on-location big broadcast set up a “prank” for Nelson at Castle Frankenstein, where a statue was in the crypt and was rigged to “move,” which sent Nelson into a panic.
Alongside Nelson and his AFRN/AFN colleagues, this also alarmed listeners of the broadcast, thinking that the “Frankenstein monster” was resurrected. Nelson later loosely compared his Halloween night big broadcast experience to Orson Welles and the Mercury Players’ classic mammoth 1938 CBS radio big broadcast masterpiece adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds,” though on a lesser scale.
Howard W. Koch’s “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) was not filmed at the studio complex of Allied Artists*
It was reported that Howard W. Koch’s classic mammoth monster/sci-fi masterpiece production was not filmed at the Monogram/Allied Artists studio lot in Hollywood, according to additional details from IMDB. Before Allied Artists was announced as the distributor of the 1958 production, the production was independently financed by Aubrey Schenck’s production firm. Scheck filmed the production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) at the studios of Warner Bros.* in Burbank, California. Schenck had hoped to distribute “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) through Warners*, yet WB* officials passed on the production; leaving Schenck to make a distribution arrangement with Allied Artists*. Some 31 years after the production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) and in an ironic twist, the Koch-Schenck-Allied Artists* feature wound up in the hands of Warner Bros.*, who acquired the majority of the Allied Artists catalogue* as part of Warner Communications (today’s Warner Bros.-Discovery)* and their acquisition of Lorimar-Telepictures* in 1989; according to additional details from IMDB, a 1989 issue of Broadcasting (Broadcasting and Cable) and a 1980 Billboard article on Lorimar’s* 1979 acquisition of Allied Artists* after the bankruptcy of Allied Artists*.
It was reported that several props and leftover interior settings from previous Warner Bros.* productions were utilized in the production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958), according to additional details from IMDB. The leftover interior settings were previously constructed for Art Napoleon’s classic mammoth Warner Bros.* biopic-drama masterpiece production on the life of Diana Barrymore, “Too Much, Too Soon” (1958) with Dorothy Malone, Errol Flynn, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Ray Danton and Martin Milner.
An iconic prop from an earlier classic mammoth Warner Bros.* feature film masterpiece was featured in Schenck’s production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958). It was also reported that the famed “Maltese Falcon” MacGuffin prop statuette from John Huston’s classic mammoth Warner Bros.* drama-film noir-mystery masterpiece adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) with Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Barton MacLane and Ward Bond.
“Frankenstein 1970” (1958): Originally part of a proposed three-picture deal between Aubrey Schenck and Boris Karloff
It was reported that Howard W. Koch and Aubrey Schenck’s classic mammoth sci-fi/monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958) was originally part of a proposed three-picture deal between Schenck and Boris Karloff, according to additional details from Kalat’s 2011 TCM online article.

Me-TV has been finally restored in my neck of the woods! Yippee! Hooray! “Yee-Howdy!” Woo-Hoo! “Hi-Keeba!” -C.H.
(June 8, 2022): Almost a Month after Me-TV was missing from my neck the woods, the Me-TV airlanes finally came back to my neck of the woods- in an interesting twist! According to an online tip from a fellow Super SvenPal/Super Tooner, they mentioned that Me-TV’s regular feed via Weigel’s WDME was now available on my cable provider’s smartphone streaming app!
https://twitter.com/MeTV/status/1533916647878283265
And I will be re-joining my fellow Super SvenPals/fellow Super Tooners from coast-to-coast in the Live-Tweeting airlanes this Thurs. Morning, June 9 for Toony & Bill’s Me-TV “Toon In With Me: Tic-Tac Toony” big broadcast on the Me-TV big broadcast airlanes alongside the future/upcoming Toony & Bill “Toon In With Me” big broadcast(s), Svengoolie’s upcoming June 11 Me-TV big broadcast premiere of “Frankenstein 1970” (1958), future/upcoming Sven big broadcasts and Sventoonie’s big broadcast(s)!
Sidebar: Since my smartphone is my only access to Me-TV at this point through my cable provider’s streaming app, I am unable to record Svengoolie & Sventoonie’s Sat. Me-TV big broadcasts. However, I can still record the late-evening editions of “Toon In With Me” via the Me-TV+/Me-TV Plus subchannel from Weigel’s WDME 48.4 (1193) through my cable box.
And I still wonder- if Verizon can restore Me-TV via WDME for both Standard-Definition and High-Definition tiers of FiOS for their subscribers in the Washington, D.C./Maryland (unavailable within Frederick County, Maryland)/Northern Virginia region – then why isn’t Comcast doing the same for Me-TV/WDME for subscribers in the Frederick County, Maryland/Washington D.C./Northern Virginia region? This is a complete mystery!
And again, as I’ve mentioned before- I hope Weigel will allow Live-Streaming of WDME’s Me-TV feed on the official Me-TV smartphone app for all viewers in the greater Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia viewing area & I also hope that Frederick County, Maryland will finally come to their senses and allow competing cable/internet providers in the region.
But for now, I am happy that Me-TV has returned to the airlanes (via my smartphone) and I will be re-joining all my fellow Super SvenPals/Super Tooners in the Live-Tweeting airlanes ! And again, I highly appreciate everyone’s concerns/messages/advice/help/wisdom in this & for saving my seat for Sven, Sventoonie & Toony & Bill’s big broadcasts! I’m looking forward to re-joining all my fellow Super SvenPals/Super Tooners in the Live-Tweeting airlanes! Let’s all dance & jump for joy! Yippee! Hooray! “Yee-Howdy!” Woo-Hoo! “Hi-Keeba!” –C.H.
