For those who can receive Me-TV**: Fellow Svengoolie SvenPals will be interested fin his upcoming big broadcast of a classic Universal Studios sci-fi masterpiece production.
Original 1957 Universal Studios theatrical release trailer for “The Monolith Monsters.”
The legendary Berwyn/Chicago-based monster/sci-fi feature film host will present his big broadcast of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957), this Sat.; June 4 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central, for those who can receive Me-TV**.
The classic mammoth 1957 Universal sci-fi creature-monster masterpiece production was directed by veteran director John Sherwood, who worked for Universal Studios for the majority of his career and also served as an assistant director/second-unit director for numerous studios, along with Universal throughout his years in the film industry.
Earlier in his assistant directorial/second-unit directorial career, Sherwood worked with Samuel Goldwyn and veteran director Sam Wood for their classic Academy Award-winning critically-acclaimed biopic masterpiece production on baseball player Lou Gehrig with Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Babe Ruth, Walter Brennan, Dan Duryea, Elsa Janssen, Ludwig Stössel and Bill Stern, “The Pride of the Yankees” (1942). Sherwood also served as an assistant director for Anthony Mann’s classic mammoth Universal biopic masterpiece on Glenn Miller with James Stewart, June Allyson, Louis Armstrong, Harry Morgan, Barton MacLane, Charles Drake, Irving Bacon and Kathleen Lockhart; “The Glenn Miller Story” (1954).
Sherwood’s other feature film productions in his Universal directorial career include his classic Universal mammoth western masterpiece production “Raw Edge” (1955) with Rory Calhoun, Yvonne De Carlo (later of Universal/TV’s “The Munsters” fame), Mara Corday (of Jack Arnold’s classic mammoth 1955 Universal sci-fi arachnid creature masterpiece production, “Tarantula” fame), Neville Brand, Rex Reason (of Joseph M. Newman’s classic mammoth 1955 Universal sci-fi masterpiece production, “This Island Earth” fame) and John Gavin. Sherwood also directed the finale feature in Universal’s classic mammoth “Creature From the Black Lagoon” monster masterpiece trilogy series; “The Creature Walks Among Us” (1956) with Jeff Morrow, Leigh Snowden, Ricou Browning and Don Megowan.
Sherwood died in 1959 after serving in an uncredited position as a second unit director for the classic mammoth Universal-Michael Gordon–Ross Hunter Academy Award-winning comedy masterpiece production of “Pillow Talk” (1959) with Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, Thelma Ritter and Hayden Rorke; according to IMDB.
The screenplay for Sherwood’s classic mammoth 1957 Universal sci-fi creature/monster masterpiece production was written by veteran screenwriters Robert M. Fresco and Norman Jolley. Fresco also co-wrote the original story treatment for “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) with veteran Universal feature film director Jack Arnold. Arnold directed the classic mammoth original Universal classic monster masterpiece production of “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (1954) with Julie Adams, Ricou Browning, Ben Chapman, Richard Carlson, Bernie Gozier, Richard Denning, Nestor Paiva, Whit Bissell and the vocal stylings of Art Gilmore.
Fresco also wrote the screenplay for Arnold’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi arachnid creature masterpiece production of “Tarantula” (1955) with John Agar, Mara Corday, Leo G. Carroll, Nestor Paiva, young Clint Eastwood, young Bing Russell, Edwin Rand, Steve Darrell, Dee Carroll, Ross Elliott, Hank Patterson, and Raymond Bailey (later of TV’s “The Beverly Hillbillies” fame). Jolley mostly worked on scripts for numerous television productions in his career, including 36 episodes of the classic mammoth MCA-Revue-Universal-NBC TV western masterpiece series, “Wagon Train” from 1958-64 and a story consultant/screenwriter for Quinn Martin’s classic mammoth detective masterpiece series with Buddy Ebsen and Lee Meriwether, “Barnaby Jones” from 1977-80.
John Sherwood’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi creature/monster masterpiece production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) was originally released as part of a coast-to-coast Universal double-feature theatrical presentation with another adventure-fantasy theatrical production from the studio. Sherwood’s classic mammoth Universal monster sci-fi masterpiece production was paired with veteran screenwriter/sci-fi author Curt Siodmak’s Universal Eastmancolor fantasy-adventure feature production of “Love-Slaves of the Amazon” (1957) with Gianna Segale, Don Taylor, Ana Maria Nabuco, Gilda Nery and Eduardo Ciannelli; according to an original 1957 Universal Studios exhibitors’ double-feature twinfold advertisement for “The Monolith Monsters” and “Love-Slaves of the Amazon.”
This will mark Sven’s fifth big broadcast of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) on Me-TV**. He previously showcased Sherwood’s Universal classic cult monster masterpiece back in Jan. 2014* as a big coast-to-coast broadcast premiere and as regular coast-to-coast big broadcasts back in Feb. 2015*, Oct. 2016* and Feb. 2020*.
In Sven/Rich Koz’s home area of Berwyn/Chicago, Illinois during his days as the “Son of Svengoolie,” Sven/Son of Sven previously showcased John Sherwood’s classic mammoth Universal Studios sci-fi creature/monster masterpiece production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) as part of his 150th Son of Sven Berwyn/Chicago big broadcast on WFLD back in June 1982; according to a video segment that was unearthed via Berwyn/Chicago television archivist Rick Klein’s official FuzzyMemoriesTV: The Museum of Classic Chicago Television YouTube site.
Who was in John Sherwood’s Universal production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957)?
The players who appeared in John Sherwood’s Universal production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) were Grant Williams (as Dave Miller), Lola Albright (as Cathy Barrett), Les Tremayne (as Martin Cochrane), Trevor Bardette (as Prof. Arthur Flanders), Phil Harvey (as Ben Gilbert), William Flaherty (as Police Chief Dan Corey), Harry Jackson (as Dr. Steve Hendricks), Richard H. Cutting (as Dr. E.J. Reynolds), Linda Scheley (as Ginny Simpson), Dean Cromer (as a highway patrol officer), Steve Darrell (as Joe Higgins), young Paul Petersen (in an uncredited role as Bobby the paperboy), young Troy Donahue (in an uncredited role as Hank Jackson), young William Schallert (in an uncredited role as a weatherman) and young Paul Frees (in an uncredited role as the narrator).
The same year that he appeared in “The Monolith Monsters” (1957), Grant Williams also appeared in the role of Scott Carey in Jack Arnold’s classic mammoth Universal Studios sci-fi/thriller/visual effects masterpiece production of “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957); he later played the role of Greg MacKenzie in the classic mammoth Warner Bros.-ABC television detective masterpiece series with Poncie Ponce, Connie Stevens, Douglas Mossman and Robert Conrad, “Hawaiian Eye” (Williams appeared in the series from 1960-63). One year after “The Monolith Monsters,” Lola Albright went onto greater fame in the role of Edie Hart in Blake Edwards’ classic mammoth TV detective masterpiece series with Craig Stevens and Herschel Bernardi, “Peter Gunn” (1958-61). Paul Petersen went onto greater fame in the role of Jeff Stone in Donna Reed’s Columbia Pictures-Screen Gems/ABC TV series, “The Donna Reed Show” (1958-66). Petersen also had a brief recording career with Columbia Pictures’ in-house record label at the time, Colpix Records from 1962-65 and recorded several songs for Berry Gordy Jr.’s Motown Records from 1967-68, according to Discogs. Petersen later appeared in several guest roles in Lawrence Gordon & Aaron Spelling’s classic mammoth ABC television detective action-adventure series with Lee Horsley and Pamela Hensley, “Matt Houston” (Petersen appeared in numerous episodes from 1982-85).
Troy Donahue later appeared in the role of Jimmy Flanders in Jack Arnold’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi monster/creature masterpiece production “Monster on the Campus” (1958) and went onto greater fame in Delmer Daves’ Warner Bros. romantic drama with Sandra Dee and Dorothy McGuire, “A Summer Place” (1959, with the famous source orchestral title track by composer Percy Faith).
William Schallert went onto greater fame for his role of Martin Lane on “The Patty Duke Show” with Patty Duke in the dual roles of Cathy Lane and Patty Lane (Duke’s show lasted from 1963-66). Veteran voice-over artist/narrator Paul Frees was known for his numerous narrations and voice-over recordings for numerous feature film, television and animated productions throughout his career, notably for the vocalization of Boris Badenov for Jay Ward’s classic mammoth TV cartoon masterpiece series, “Rocky and His Friends” from 1959-61 and the original voice of the stop-motion “Pillsbury Doughboy” character for numerous Pillsbury television commercials from 1965 until his death in 1986.
A significant change in the basis/origin for the “Monolith Monster” for Sherwood’s classic mammoth 1957 Universal sci-fi creature/monster masterpiece
It was mentioned that John Sherwood’s classic mammoth Universal sci-fi/creature/monster masterpiece production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) had a significant change in the origin of the “monster”/”creature” in the script. According to additional details from IMDB, Sherwood’s production did not feature typical “monster” creation that was devised by the usual “mad scientist” characters in Universal and competing studios’ classic mammoth monster/sci-fi/horror masterpieces. The Sherwood-Universal production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) marked the only classic mammoth sci-fi monster feature film masterpiece where the monster character was created from chemical-based processes.
“The Monolith Monster” (1957) and Universal’s sci-fi creature/monster genre at the time of the original theatrical release & original working title for John Sherwood’s production
According to veteran sci-fi feature film historian Bill Warren’s retrospective book on classic/cult classic mammoth sci-fi feature film masterpieces, “Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties: The 21st Century Edition;” it was reported that Sherwood’s Universal production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) was produced during the final round of sci-fi genre productions at Universal.
Alongside the production of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957), Sherwood’s production was noted as one of Universal’s final forays into sci-fi feature film productions in addition to the studio’s production of “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957) at the time.
The original working title for Sherwood’s classic mammoth 1957 Universal sci-fi/creature/monster masterpiece production of “The Monolith Monsters” was under the title of “Monolith,” according to the American Film Institute’s database article on Sherwood’s 1957 cult Universal classic sci-fi monster production.
Universal’s competitions in the sci-fi genre during “The Monolith Monsters” (1957)
It was noted that Universal’s latter classic mammoth sci-fi/sci-fi creature masterpiece feature productions were made for double-feature showcases with other feature film productions that were imported by Universal at the time.
Universal executives’ decision to focus less on sci-fi feature productions was also challenged by competing/rival studio Columbia Pictures after the major success of Ray Harryhausen and Robert Gordon’s classic mammoth Columbia “Dynamation” sci-fi stop-motion creature masterpiece production of “It Came From Beneath the Sea” (1955) with Kenneth Tobey, Faith Domergue, Donald Curtis, Dean Maddox Jr. and Harry Lauter; veteran Universal producer William Alland noted that the classic mammoth Columbia-Harryhausen-Gordon sci-fi creature masterpiece production was completed on an economical scale and was a major box-office success, Alland feared that Universal could not match up to the successes of the Columbia-Harryhausen classic mammoth Dynamation creature masterpiece productions at the time. Though he cited that Columbia’s stock footage was the reason for the success of “It Came From Beneath the Sea” (1955); it was reported Alland did not pay attention to the main success of the classic mammoth Harryhausen-Columbia sci-fi creature masterpiece films; which was the signature “Dynamation” stop-motion creature characters/creature effects from Harryhausen; according to additional details from Bill Warren’s “Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties: The 21st Century Edition.”
While Universal and several other competing major studios were winding down on their sci-fi feature film productions, the independent production/releasing outfits- notably Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson’s American-International Pictures (AIP) found new success in the sci-fi feature film genre with the teenage/drive-in audience market at the time; according to Eamon Harrington and John Watkin’s retrospective documentary on Arkoff and Nicholson’s AIP; “It Conquered Hollywood! The Story of American International Pictures” (2001).
For those who can receive Me-TV**: Be sure to watch/record Svengoolie’s big broadcast of “The Monolith Monsters” (1957) plus “Sventoonie” (again, for those who can receive Me-TV)**
![Sven_Kerwyn_Studio_2021](https://silverscreenreflex.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/sven_kerwyn_studio_2021.jpg?w=608&h=554)
Again, I wish it was easy to receive Me-TV again! I’m missing Svengoolie, Sventoonie & the morning “Toon In” big broadcasts & I’m missing all my fellow Super SvenPals/Super Tooners! I want to re-join my fellow Super SvenPals/fellow Super Tooners! As I’ve stated before, I’m missing all of you! -C.H.
Again, to those who can receive Me-TV*: With Grant Williams, Lola Albright, Les Tremayne, Trevor Bardette, Phil Harvey, William Flaherty, Harry Jackson, Richard H. Cutting, Linda Scheley, Dean Cromer, Steve Darrell, young Paul Petersen, young Troy Donahue, young William Schallert and the vocal stylings of young Paul Frees and “Sventoonie-“ be sure to watch- I wish Me-TV would instantly come back to my neck of the woods- again, I’m missing all my fellow Super SvenPals/fellow Super Tooners! –C.H.
*From 2013-17 in the Washington, D.C./Frederick Maryland/Northern Virginia viewing region: Me-TV was seen originally on WJLA-TV and then was on WTTG/5.3 from 2017-May 9, 2022 before moving to Weigel’s WDME-48 on May 9, 2022**. -C.H.
Sat., June 4 at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central– again, for those that can recieve Me-TV**
**Week #4: Me-TV is still missing and has not been restored at all in Frederick County, Maryland as of this writing. 😦
Again, despite all efforts and forgive me for sounding like a “broken record-” Me-TV is still not available in my neck of the woods as of this writing. Again, even with the strongest outdoor antenna setup- I can’t receive Weigel’s WDME/48 over-the-air since low-powered TV stations are not receivable within the Frederick County, Maryland region. Same problems with trying to receive Baltimore’s full-powered WBAL-TV 11.2 for Me-TV (virtual channel 11/digital physical channel 12) along with similarreception problems with WGAL-8.2 from Lancaster/York, Pennsylvania for Me-TV ; mostly due to terrain problems within my area.
And as of this writing, still no update from Weigel on the possibility of Live-streaming WDME’s Me-TV on the official Me-TV smartphone app. Even since the latest edition of the official Me-TV E-Mail newsletter arrived, there’s no mention of Live-Streaming WDME’s Me-TV feed on the official Me-TV smartphone app for the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Northern Virginia viewing market.
Kudos/credit to fellow Svengoolie & Sventoonie Super SvenPals/fellow “Toon In With Me” Super Tooners Drew L. and Sarah Rhodes/Sarahgoolie for spreading the word about this from the news that was announced on the official Me-TV site: Me-TV and Verizon have announced that Me-TV, via Weigel’s WDME/48 will be restored on Verizon’s FiOS fiber-optic cable service for subscribers of FiOS in parts of the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Northern Virginia viewing market beginning sometime soon in June- a tentative day has not been announced/revealed yet.
The unfortunate part is that Verizon’s FiOS is not available in my neck of the woods/Frederick County, Maryland.
Since Me-TV and Verizon have announced a timetable for the restoration of Me-TV via Weigel’s WDME/48 on FiOS in June, this makes me wonder- will Comcast finally have a timetable on the restoration of Me-TV via Weigel’s WDME/48 on all cable tiers/cable services within the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Northern Virginia viewing market?
![DSC06512](https://silverscreenreflex.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/dsc06512.jpg?w=707&h=530)
Shame on Comcast for not allowing Me-TV to be seen on all cable services/cable tiers! Me-TV is a broadcast network channel/broadcast subchannel, NOT a pay-cable network!
As of this writing, unfortunately- Comcast is still up to their unfair trickery to Me-TV, by only offering Weigel/WDME’s Me-TV feed in a pricey HD package. Again, Comcast has failed to realize that Me-TV is a broadcast network/broadcast subchannel and is being carried by a local broadcast affiliate, NOT a pay-cable network. As I’ve stated before, no one should have to pay extra to watch regular broadcast channel affiliates/regular broadcast subchannels like Me-TV on cable.
And once again, Shame on Comcast & shame on Comcast’s management for doing these unfair tricks to WDME/Me-TV!
And again, I wish Frederick County, Maryland would get with the times by adding better and more affordable cable/internet providers, including ones that would carry Me-TV on all tiers/all levels of service. Again, also wish for better broadcast reception of local stations and I also wish Weigel would Live-Stream WDME/Me-TV on the official Me-TV smartphone app.
Once more, I’m trying everything that I can do to get Me-TV’s airlanes restored within my neck of the woods.
All I want to do is to re-join my fellow Svengoolie & Sventoonie Super SvenPals/fellow “Toon In With Me” Super Tooners for watching and Live-Tweeting Sven, Sventoonie & Toony & Bill’s big Me-TV broadcasts- as I’ve mentioned before, I definitely miss watching and Live-Tweeting Svengoolie, “Toon In With Me” & Sventoonie with all my fellow Super SvenPals/fellow Super Tooners!
And with Sven’s upcoming 43rd anniversary on June 16 in the Berwyn/Chicago big broadcast airlanes– I really want Me-TV to return to my neck of the woods immediately!
Again, if anyone has any additional tips/tricks/advice in this, feel free to let me know- I highly appreciate everyone’s advice!
And if any new updates occur in connection to Me-TV, I will inform everyone.
Once again, I highly appreciate everyone’s messages/concerns/advice/help/wisdom in this & for saving my seat for Sven, Sventoonie & Toony & Bill’s big broadcasts- again, I’m missing everyone I hope to re-join with all of you again in the airlanes once Me-TV returns to my neck of the woods!
