Ishiro Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios/Universal masterpiece production of “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962/1963) marked the debut of an iconic sound effect recording creation for the classic mammoth kaiju creature battle masterpiece production. According to IMDB, the 1962/63 Toho Studios production contained the famous “Gojira/Godzilla” high-pitched “roar” sound effect recording, which was a mix of two previous “Gojira/Godzilla” roar recordings that were originally created for Honda’s earlier 1954 production of “Gojira”/”Godzilla.” Toho Studios sound effects/sound recording engineers/sound editors Sadamasa Nishimoto and Hisashi Shimonaga created the distinct “Gojira/Godzilla roar” mix and has been used in latter classic mammoth Toho Studios Gojira/Godzilla kaiju creature feature film masterpiece productions over the years..

According to additional details from IMDB’s trivia section on Ishiro Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature battle masterpiece production of “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962/63). It was reported that veteran Toho Studios stunt performer/actor Haruo Nakajima and Shoichi Hirose performed a notable stunt sequence during one of the “battle” sequences between King Kong (Hirose) and Gojira/Godzilla (Nakajima). It was reported that when Hirose performed one of the battle sequences in his “King Kong” creature suit/costume, he did not use a “prop” dummy version of the trademark “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature and/or an empty version of the “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature suit for the throwing sequence. Hirose threw Nakajima in his “Gojira/Godzilla” kaiju creature suit in the form of a Judo exercise move, the “King Kong”-suited actor wanted to demonstrate that he was stronger than the “Gojira/Godzilla”-suited actor. Haruo Nakajima also perfected the fight and choreography sequences for Honda’s 1962/63 classic mammoth kaiju creature masterpiece production.
It was also reported that the “Gojira/Godzilla” suit that was worn by Nakajima was changed for the production of “King Kong vs. Godzilla:” According to additional details from IMDB, Toho Studios wanted to make “Gojira/Godzilla” less menacing in the 1963 production, which also meant the alteration of three toes on each foot instead of four toes for “Gojira/Godzilla” and the removal of Gojira/Godzilla’s “ears” for Haruo Nakajima’s kaiju creature outfit, along with a bulky suit build. This was due to the fact that Toho Studios wanted to make “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962) as a kaiju creature production film with more comedic and lighthearted elements.
Eiji Tsuburaya’s “Big Pool” innovation for Toho Studios was used in “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962/1963)

Original 1963 Universal Studios theatrical lobby card/publicity photo for the North American theatrical release of Ishirô Honda’s classic mammoth Toho Studios kaiju creature masterpiece, “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (produced in 1962).
Two years before production began on “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962) in Japan, Veteran Toho Studios special effects supervisor Eiji Tsuburaya persuaded the company to construct a large water tank for special effects and visual effects sequences. Constructed in 1960, Toho Studios’ “Big Tank” was used for the underwater sequences in Honda’s classic mammoth 1962/1963 kaiju creature feature masterpiece production, according to additional details from IMDB. “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962/63) marked one of the early major Toho Studios feature film productions to utilize Tsuburaya’s “Big Tank” underwater tank system. Toho Studios utilized their “Big Tank” for special effects and visual effects sequences in the company’s numerous latter feature film productions and television series, including the latter “Gojira/Godzilla” feature film productions and the studio’s latter kaiju creature feature film masterpieces.
Toho Studios used their “Big Pool” tank in their productions until “Godzilla: Final Wars” (2004); which was the last feature film by the company to use the “Big Pool” tank for water sequences. As part of a studio-wide restructuring plan shortly after production completed on “Godzilla: Final Wars,” Toho Studios decided to tear down the “Big Pool” tank in late 2004, according to IMDB.

According to the American Widescreen Museum, Perspecta Sound was a simulated three-channel stereophonic sound format that was converted from a monaural sound source. Of interest to our fellow Super Tooners/SvenPals of Toony & Bill’s weekday morning “Toon In With Me” classic cartoon masterpiece showcase on Me-TV, the Perspecta Sound simulated stereophonic sound process was used by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) for several 1950s theatrical re-issues of their classic mammoth “Tom & Jerry” cartoon masterpieces, according to animation historian Jerry Beck’s Cartoon Research.

*For the RKO/RKO General connection: General Tire acquired the feature film remnants of RKO Radio Pictures from business tycoon Howard Hughes in 1955; as the tire company was looking for additional feature film programming for their line of “General Teleradio”/RKO General TV stations at the time, the RKO features were also leased to C&C Television Corp. to non-RKO General TV stations around the same time under the “Movietime USA” package). Veteran broadcast/cable mogul Ted Turner acquired the rights to the RKO Radio Pictures library from General Tire/GenCorp/RKO General/Wesray in 1987; Time Warner (now known as Warner Media) merged with Ted Turner’s media/entertainment/cable properties in 1996; Warner Bros. owns the North American rights to the majority of the RKO library of feature films through the studio’s Turner holdings. The current incarnation of RKO Pictures (formed as an independent organization after the demise of General Tire/GenCorp’s RKO General unit and the tire conglomerate’s exit from entertainment/broadcasting) handles the copyright, trademark, character, script/re-make rights (co-productions with other studios for re-makes) and stage adaptation rights to the classic RKO features. –C.H.
