The classic mammoth 1931 landmark classic Universal monster masterpiece adaptation was directed by veteran Universal director James Whale. Wells’ “The Invisible Man” (1933) with Claude Rains, Gloria Stuart and Una O’Connor. Faragoh and Fort’s screenplay adaptation was inspired by veteran playwrights Peggy Webling and John L. Balderston’s proposed script idea for a “Frankenstein” stage play adaptation. Whale’s classic mammoth 1931 Universal monster masterpiece production adaptation of “Frankenstein” was co-produced by Carl Laemmle Jr., the son of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle with veteran associate producer E.M. Asher.
Sven’s upcoming big “Franken-Fest” broadcast of “Frankenstein” (1931) will mark his seventh big broadcast of Whale’s 1931 classic mammoth Universal landmark monster masterpiece on Me-TV’s airlanes. Who was in Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece adaptation production of “Frankenstein” (1931)?
The players who appeared in James Whale’s classic Universal landmark monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein” (1931) were Boris Karloff (as Frankenstein’s monster; the same year that he appeared in the legendary Universal monster role in Whale’s classic mammoth 1931 Universal monster masterpiece adaptation production, he previously appeared in the role of villain T. Vernon Isopod in Mervyn LeRoy’s classic mammoth 1931 Warner Bros.-First National “Vitaphone”* drama masterpiece with Edward G. Robinson, Marian Marsh and H.B. Warner; “Five Star Final”; Karloff later reprised his role of Frankenstein’s monster in Whale’s classic 1935 mammoth Universal monster sequel masterpiece with Elsa Lanchester, “Bride of Frankenstein” and for a third and final time in Rowland V. Lee’s classic 1939 mammoth Universal monster masterpiece installment, “Son of Frankenstein” with Rathbone and Lugosi), Mae Clarke (as Elizabeth, one year after “Frankenstein;” Clarke later appeared in the role of journalist Ann Woodman Howard Higgin’s classic mammoth Columbia Pictures drama masterpiece with Pat O’Brien, “The Final Edition”), Colin Clive (as Dr. Henry Frankenstein, Clive later played the role of Sir Christopher Strong in Dorothy Arzner’s classic mammoth 1933 RKO Radio Pictures drama masterpiece with Katharine Hepburn and Billie Burke; “Christopher Strong”), Dwight Frye (as Fritz, Frye previously appeared in the role of Renfield in Tod Browning & Karl Freund’s classic mammoth 1931 Universal vampire monster masterpiece adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” with Bela Lugosi; Frye also appeared in an uncredited role as a reporter in Whale’s classic mammoth 1933 Universal sci-fi monster masterpiece adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “The Invisible Man” with Claude Rains), Edward Van Sloan (who played the dual roles of Dr. Waldman and the introductory “Frankenstein” feature prologue narrator; Van Sloan previously appeared in the role of Van Helsing in Tod Browning’s classic mammoth 1931 Universal monster masterpiece adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” with Lugosi and Frye; Van Sloan also played the role of Dr. Muller in Karl Freund’s classic mammoth 1932 Universal monster masterpiece production of “The Mummy” with Karloff), Francis Ford (in an uncredited screen role as Hans, Ford was the older brother of veteran feature film director John Ford ), Marilyn Harris (as Maria), Frederick Kerr (as Baron Frankenstein), John Boles (as Victor Moritz) and Lionel Belmore (as the Burgomaster).
Additional insight into the early pre-production proposal for the Universal adaptation of “Frankenstein” (1931) and the original concept “Frankenstein” monster art
![Original_1931_Universal_Studios_Newspaper_Advertising_Element_James_Whale_Frankenstein_Boris_Karloff_Mae_Clarke_Colin_Clive_With_Warning](https://silverscreenreflex.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/original_1931_universal_studios_newspaper_advertising_element_james_whale_frankenstein_boris_karloff_mae_clarke_colin_clive_with_warning.jpg?w=598&h=939)
“I gave him life, but he wanted love!” “A Universal ‘super attraction’!” Original 1931 Universal Studios newspaper advertising proof for James Whale‘s production of “Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff. .
According to details from Universal’s 1999 DVD supplemental documentary featurette on “Frankenstein” (1931) and the studio’s classic mammoth “Frankenstein” monster masterpiece series, titled “The Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster,” veteran director Robert Florey was originally slated to direct the studio’s proposed “Frankenstein” monster feature production.
It was reported that Florey wanted his “Frankenstein” production proposal to be inspired by the earlier silent German expressionist horror feature films, primarily Robert Wiene’s production of “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920). Florey also wanted Bela Lugosi to play the role of Frankenstein’s monster, which was originally conceived in the style of a “Golem”-style creature. Universal make-up artists led by veteran studio make-up designer Jack Pierce did a couple of make-up tests with Lugosi in the “Golem”-style Frankenstein creature. It was also reported that Lugosi was not interested in the Universal “Frankenstein” feature film adaptation from the start, Lugosi originally wanted to play the role of Dr. Frankenstein Florey was dropped from the production and James Whale was chosen instead. Whale personally chose Boris Karloff for the role of Frankenstein’s monster in the classic mammoth 1931 Universal horror-thriller masterpiece. Florey would later apply his expressionist inspirations to his latter classic mammoth Universal thriller-horror masterpiece of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Murders in the Rue Morgue” with Bela Lugosi.
For the original 1930 pre-production concept promotional art for the Universal production of “Frankenstein” with a mention of Bela Lugosi, the “concept” version of the “Frankenstein” monster had more of a giant “larger-than-life sci-fi creature” look instead of the traditional cinema “monster” character.
Additional insight into Boris Karloff’s “Frankenstein” (1931) appearance for Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece adaptation

“Sounds like a ‘hot dog’ and a ‘glass of beer’!” Original 1931 Universal Studios publicity photo of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster in “Frankenstein.”
Prior to filming his classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein” (1931), James Whale discovered Karloff for the role in the Universal Studios commissary, according to additional details from the 1999 Universal DVD retrospective documentary featurette, “The Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster.” After Jack Pierce applied the trademark Universal “Frankenstein” monster make-up design to Karloff, it was reported that the veteran actor experienced discomfort during the production, mostly due to the heavy padded clothing and boots that he wore for his role; along with the hot summertime heat and intense studio lights during Whale’s production; according to Frank Taylor’s Nov. 1967 retrospective article on Karloff and his Universal “Frankenstein” feature film appearances in Hollywood Studio Magazine, titled “Hollywood’s Happiest Monster.”
During one of the laboratory scene sequences in “Frankenstein” (1931) it was also reported that Karloff was concerned about the hot carbon arcs that were used by Universal Studios propmasters for “lightning effects” in the laboratory sequences. According to Boris Karloff’s real-life daughter, Sara Karloff’s recollections on her father in he 1999 Universal DVD retrospective documentary featurette, “The Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster” on the topic of her father being typecast in monster and horror feature film roles throughout the majority of his screen career after “Frankenstein” (1931) and from her father’s own acting experiences after “Frankenstein,” her father once noted that he was lucky that he was being typecast in monster/horror feature film roles in his screen career.
Carl Laemmle’s advisory during the original theatrical screening of “Frankenstein” (1931)

“Extra! The thriller of all time!” Original 1931 Universal Studios exhibitors’ ad on the success of James Whale‘s production of “Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff. .
According to Phil M. Daly’s “Along the Rialto” section in the Dec. 1931 edition of The Film Daily, during a Universal test preview screening of James Whale’s classic mammoth monster masterpiece adaptation production of “Frankenstein,” studio chairperson and founder Carl Laemmle wanted to make sure that audience members would not be spooked/scared by Boris Karloff’s screen portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster. The Universal founder/chairperson made sure that the studio’s publicity department made a pre-show “warning” trailer to warn audience members about the film during the original theatrical runs. To this day, the aforementioned “warning”/advisory disclaimer trailer for “Frankenstein” (1931) has not surfaced since the original theatrical run.
Promotional tie-ins from coast-to-coast during the original Universal theatrical screening of “Frankenstein” (1931) from coast-to-coast
![Mayfair_Theatre_NYC_Universal_Frankenstein_Display_1931_32](https://silverscreenreflex.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/mayfair_theatre_nyc_universal_frankenstein_display_1931_32.jpg?w=634&h=489)
The now-defunct Mayfair Theatre in New York City during the original Universal theatrical release of “Frankenstein” (1931).
According to the Feb. 1932 edition of Motion Picture Herald, it was reported that Universal encouraged participating theatres from coast-to-coat to promote the original theatrical screening of James Whale’s classic mammoth studio monster masterpiece adaptation of “Frankenstein” (1931) with promotional tie-ins and gimmicks. At the now-defunct Mayfair Theatre in New York City, New York; the theater manager outfitted the entire ticket booth and lobby with customized “Frankenstein” monster art, also covering the lobby doors. For the original theatrical screening of “Frankenstein” (1931) at the now-defunct State-Lake Theatre in Chicago, Illinois; the State-Lake theatre manager hired four registered nurses to tend to audience members who were scared/spooked during the original theatrical screening of “Frankenstein” (1931); the theater also hired additional actors to portray mock nurses to hand out mock “nerve tonic capsules” to concerned theater patrons on the streets of Chicago.
During the promotion of the screening of “Frankenstein” (1931) at the now-defunct Midwest Theatre in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; the Midwest Theatre manager added an extra “gimmick” prior to screening the original theatrical trailer for Whale’s classic 1931 mammoth Universal monster masterpiece production. Moments before the theatrical trailer, the Midwest Theatre management had the lights off. A gramophone record with source sound effects of “haunted groans” played through the theater’s audio system. Then, a glass art lantern slide featuring a detailed illustration of a mock “Frankenstein monster” appeared on the screen, along with the use of mirrors to project the illustration through different areas of the theater venue.
Latter promotional contest tie-in for the Realart double feature theatrical re-release of James Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein” (1931) with another classic 1931 Universal monster masterpiece
For the latter Realart double-feature theatrical re-issue of James Whale’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece adaptation of “Frankenstein” (1931) and Tod Browning’s classic mammoth Universal monster masterpiece adaptation of “Dracula” (1931) in 1952, the now-defunct Paramount Theatre in Middletown, Ohio held a promotional stunt where theater management dressed up in costume as Frankenstein’s monster and/or Count Dracula to promote the double-feature presentation. According to the Sept. 1952 edition of Exhibitor, Middletown Paramount Theatre manager Dwight Kirk won Realart’s coast-to-coast “Frankenstein & Dracula” double-feature monster costume contest.
Latter restoration/discovery of Colin Clive’s full iconic dialogue/phrase for “Frankenstein” (1931)
Shortly before Universal’s 1938 theatrical re-release of James Whale’s classic mammoth monster masterpiece production of “Frankenstein” (1931), due to objections from the Motion Picture Code at the time; the studio cut out/edited Clive’s “In the name of God, now I know what if feels like to be God!” dialogue line in the famous “It’s Alive! It’s Alive!” sequence in the film, along with other cuts to the film; according to the American Film Institute; along with other cuts in order for the theatrical re-release. For many years, the edited 1938 theatrical re-release print of “Frankenstein” (1931) was used in latter Realart revival screenings, the 1957 “Shock!” television syndication package of classic Universal mammoth monster/horror feature films when Universal leased the television syndication rights to the pre-1948 catalog to competing studio Columbia Pictures’ Screen Gems unit and the early 1970s MCA/Universal TV syndication package of classic mammoth Universal monster/horror masterpiece features.
According to veteran film director/historian Donald F. Glut’s recollections in the 1999 Universal DVD retrospective documentary featurette, “The Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster,” he mentioned that around 1966, a unknown Los Angeles, California radio disc jockey found a copy of one of the original “Vitaphone”*-style sound discs from Universal’s original 1931 theatrical release of “Frankenstein” in the archives of a local Los Angeles radio station with Clive’s complete dialogue for the sound-on-disc projection format. Universal released a “restored” version of “Frankenstein” (1931) in 1986 with the majority of Clive’s phrase in the aforementioned scene restored/repaired, along with the re-addition of the confrontation/conflict between Frankenstein’s Monster (Karloff) & Fritz (Frye) and the re-addition of the scene between the Monster and Maria (Marilyn Harris). In 2012, Universal performed a High-Definition restoration of “Frankenstein” (1931) for the studio’s centennial, utilizing modern picture and modern audio restoration techniques; which brought greater fidelity to the source sound/soundtrack/dialogue recording.
