Classic moviegoers around the area and beyond enjoyed the revival showing of one of the most iconic musicals of the silver screen.
Second (and final) day of the coast-to-coast revival screening of “Singin’ in the Rain” (Part of Turner Classic Movies’ “Big Screen Classics” series)
After receiving word that the Frederick area would get to see the 65th anniversary re-release of the 1952 musical “Singin’ in the Rain” on the big screen, I decided to go see the Gene Kelly-Arthur Freed musical on the silver screen. It was shown at Frederick’s lone first-run cineplex venue, the Westview 16* on Wed., Jan. 18. This was the second (and final) day of the nationwide revival screening.
As part of Turner Classic Movies’ “Big Screen Classics” classic film series (presented in conjunction with Fathom Events), cinemagoers in the Frederick area rarely get to experience many classic film revival screenings from TCM’s big screen series, along with other cinematic specials offered from time-to-time by Fathom.
I had seen “Singin’ in the Rain” many times before, only on television and in recent years, on DVD. This was my first experience watching the celebrated filmed musical on the big screen. I attended the afternoon screening of “Singin’ in the Rain” that was held at the Westview 16 cineplex.
The presentation began with an advertisement for TCM’s upcoming Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles, which will take place in April. Shortly before Ben Mankiewicz’s prerecorded introduction to “Singin’ in the Rain,” there was a slide that stated that the revival screening of “Singin’ in the Rain” was dedicated in memory of Debbie Reynolds.
The revival of “Singin’ in the Rain” on the big screen: A delightful (and entertaining) time was enjoyed by all!
The afternoon revival screening of “Singin’ in the Rain” was an enlightening and entertaining experience by watching the performances of Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, Jean Hagen, Cyd Charisse and a young Rita Moreno (in one of her earliest film roles) on the big screen.
To those that have watched the Jan. 15 or Jan. 18 Fathom Events revival screening of “Singin’ in the Rain” (or if you have seen it on TV or on any home entertainment format) in theaters from coast-to-coast, the author of “Silver Screen Reflections” would like to hear from you! Feel free to share your thoughts or experiences at the comments section!
Hope everyone near and far enjoyed the revival screening of “Singin’ in the Rain!”
*The author of “Silver Screen Reflections” rarely frequents the Westview 16 cineplex. Here’s hoping that the theater (or if another first-run cinema venue comes to the Frederick area, including theaters in surrounding areas) will participate in more “TCM Big Screen Classics” and Fathom Events screenings in the future.
