The film was directed by Jack Arnold, who also worked on “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954), “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957) and “Monster on the Campus” (1958). The story was written by science fiction writer Ray Bradbury and the screenplay adaptation was written by Harry Essex.
Who was in “It Came from Outer Space” (1953)?
The players who appeared in Jack Arnold’s film were Richard Carlson (as Jack Putnam), Barbara Rush (as Ellen Fields), Charles Drake (as Sheriff Matt Warren), Russell Johnson (as George), Kathleen Hughes (as June) and Joseph Sawyer (as Frank Daylon).
The following year, Richard Carlson appeared in “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954). Two years after “It Came from Outer Space” was released, Russell Johnson appeared in another Universal sci-fi feature, “This Island Earth” (1955).

According to IMDB’s trivia section on “It Came from Outer Space,” one of the rejected creature designs for the film was later used for the design of the Metaluna Mutant in “This Island Earth.”

Arnold had strict control over the production elements of his film, according to the American Film Institute’s database entry on the film. All players agreed to sign Arnold’s pledge document not to reveal any secrets of the story (including specific production elements) to the public.
Universal Studios’ first 3-D film
“It Came From Outer Space” was Universal’s first 3-D production, according to additional details from AFI’s database. This also marked the first time that a major studio 3-D release was combined with widescreen and stereophonic sound.
According to a 1953 Universal Studios publicity ad for “It Came From Outer Space,” the studio also released their first 3-D live-action musical short that same year with Nat King Cole and Russ Morgan’s orchestra.
Two decades later, the studio re-released “It Came from Outer Space” as a double-feature presentation with “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (in anaglyph 3-D, instead of the original polarized 3-D process, according to an article from the 3-D Film Archive ).
Recently, Bob Furmanek’s 3-D Film Archive preservation team restored the original polarized 3-D elements of “It Came from Outer Space” (for Universal’s high-definition Blu-Ray release of the film in Oct. 2016, originally released as an exclusive to Best Buy store locations).
