1959 Universal Studios trailer for “Curse of the Undead.”
The film was directed by Edward Dein, who would later work on directing several television programs (including episodes of “Hawaiian Eye,” “The Wild Wild West” and “Baa Baa Black Sheep/Black Sheep Squadron.”
Who was in “Curse of the Undead” (1959)?
The players who appeared in Dein’s film were Eric Fleming (as preacher Dan Young), Michael Pate (who played the dual roles of Drake Robey and Don Drago Robles), Kathleen Crowley (as Dolores Carter), John Hoyt (as Dr. John Carter), Helen Kleeb (as Dora) and Henry Darrow (as Roberto Robles, who was not credited in the film).
That same year, Eric Fleming would better known for his role of Gil Favor in the hit TV western series, “Rawhide.” The series lasted for eight seasons on CBS (1959-65).
Henry Darrow would go on to greater fame in another hit TV western series, “The High Chaparral” (Darrow played the role of Manolito Montoya). The series lasted for four seasons on NBC (1967-71).
Additional working titles for “Curse of the Undead”
There were several other working titles for the Universal vampire western, including “Mark of the West” and “Affairs of a Vampire” (according to IMDB’s trivia section on the film).
Released as a double-feature with Hammer Studios’ “The Mummy”
According to a Universal Studios publicity trade advertisement that was featured in BoxOffice magazine (published in June 1959), “Curse of the Undead” was released as a “double feature” presentation with another smash monster film.
The other feature was Hammer Films’ adaptation of “The Mummy” (Universal obtained the North American releasing rights to the British film adaption, which featured Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Yvonne Furneaux).
