An announcement was made recently on the official Mystery Science Theater 3000 site that the first nationwide touring production of MST3K will be brought to 29 major cities throughout the country. The showcase is titled “Mystery Science Theater 3000 Live: ‘Watch out for Snakes!’ Tour” and will run from July 6-Aug. 12 in select cities.
Tickets for the nationwide MST3K live tour event will go on sale this Fri., May 18 at Noon (local time). A chart of participating theater venues (with ticket links) are available on the “tour” section of the official MST3K website. Some participating theater venues (in select cities) will have two individual MST3K live shows (with separate ticket admissions).
The “Mystery Science Theater 3000” live event will be produced by Joel Hodgson, original series creator and the first host of MST3K. According to Erik Adams’ A.V. Club article on the MST3K live tour, Hodgson will also serve as the emcee of the live tour event.
Who will be appearing on the MST3K live tour?
Appearing in the upcoming “Mystery Science Theater 3000” live tour will be Jonah Ray (as Jonah Heston, the third host/test subject of the series). Jonah will be joined by the iconic wisecracking robot companions Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, along with an appearance by Gypsy.*
There will also be live appearances by Rebecca Hanson (as Synthia Forrester, a clone of mad overlord Pearl Forrester) and the “Boneheads.”
*Sidebar: According to the recent YouTube advertisement for the upcoming MST3K live tour, there is a disclaimer that the voices of the bots may vary (in the current MST3K run on Netflix, Crow is voiced by Hampton Yount, Tom is voiced by Baron Vaughn and Gypsy is voiced by Rebecca Hanson.
Bonus “video feed” cameo appearances by the new “mads”
There will be appearances by the new “mads” in the series, comedians Felicia Day (as Kinga Forrester) and Patton Oswalt (as Max, TV’s “Son” of TV’s Frank). The current crop of “mads” will not be on stage, but will be speaking to Jonah and the bots (via video feed).
What movie will be riffed in the MST3K live show?
A familiar Z-budget movie that has been riffed before on the original MST3K series (ep. #506, which aired on Comedy Central in Aug. 1993), “Eegah!” (1962, featuring Arch Hall, Jr., Marilyn Manning and Richard Kiel in the title role).
Wait… there’s more (and audience participation)!
In select cities during the tour, there will be another separate MST3K live show that will be taking place after “Eegah!” with a “surprise” Z-budget sci-fi feature!
For the two individual MST3K shows, there will be audience participation!
Whether you’re a fellow MSTie (classic/vintage MST3K episodes or the new season on Netflix), a fan of RiffTrax (w/MST3K alums Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett), or “The Mads Are Back!” movie riffing touring showcase (w/MST3K alums Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff); you will not want to miss out on the upcoming “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ live tour!
