It’s time for RiffTrax Live: “Samurai Cop”
RiffTrax, in association with Fathom Events and Cinema Epoch will be presenting RiffTrax Live: “Samurai Cop” in select cinema venues from coast-to-coast on Thurs., April 13 at 8 p.m. (local time). A pre-recorded encore presentation of the RiffTrax Live event will take place on Tue., April 18 at 7:30 p.m. (local time). The RiffTrax Live presentation will be broadcast to select theaters live via satellite from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee.
Featuring MST3K alums Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, the RiffTrax crew will be riffing the 1991 Z-budget action film, “Samurai Cop.”
This hasn’t been the first time that Mike, Kevin and Bill have riffed “Samurai Cop.” The RiffTrax crew released their rendition of the low-budget cheesy action flick in March 2016.
Robert Z’Dar appeared in two other Z-budget films that were riffed on “MST3K”
Robert Z’Dar (who played Yamashita in “Samurai Cop”) appeared in two Z-budget films that were riffed by Mike Nelson and the bots on MST3K, “Soultaker” (episode #1001) and “Future War” (episode #1004). Both “Soultaker” and “Future War” aired in 1999 during the show’s 10th (and final) season on the Sci-Fi Channel (now known as “Syfy”).
There will be more upcoming “RiffTrax Live” events (in addition to “Samurai Cop”)
As a result of the RiffTrax crew’s successful Kickstarter campaign, the upcoming “RiffTrax Live” presentation of “Samurai Cop” is one of three upcoming live cinematic riffing events.
Other upcoming RiffTrax events will include a live “Summer Shorts Beach Party” (riffing vintage cheesy educational short subjects) on June 15 in select theaters. The event will feature the RiffTrax crew and guest MST3K alums Bridget Nelson, Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu*, Frank Conniff* and guest comedian Paul F. Tompkins.
On August 17, there will be a special “RiffTrax Live” screening where Mike, Kevin and Bill will riff the 1983 feature-length Doctor Who episode, “The Five Doctors” (by special arrangement with BBC’s North American licensing arm). Perfect for fellow Whovians (in addition to MSTies and fans of RiffTrax)!
Why you should watch RiffTrax Live: “Samurai Cop”
You will not want to miss out the upcoming RiffTrax Live presentation of “Samurai Cop” with the fine art of movie riffing by Mike, Kevin and Bill! Perfect for fellow MSTies (shortly before the premiere of the Jonah Ray MST3K revival on Netflix) and fans of RiffTrax (and for those that have never experienced RiffTrax)!
*Sidebar: Speaking of MST3K alums Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff (“The Mads are Back!” movie riffing tour showcase)…
I enjoyed watching Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff’s live movie riffing appearance at the Alamo Drafthouse Cineplex in Ashburn, Virginia, which took place on the evening of March 31. This was part of the duo’s nationwide live cinematic riffing tour showcase, “The Mads are Back!” Trace and Frank riffed the 1956 Z-budget Chuck Connors film noir flick, “Walk the Dark Street” (two years before Connors hit it big in the TV western “The Rifleman”).
The film was a “golden turkey,” but Trace and Frank’s riffing was perfect throughout the whole show! I also got the opportunity to meet both MST3K alums in person before the show (and Frank autographed my copy of his book, “Twenty Five Mystery Science Theater 3000 Films That Changed My Life in No Way Whatsoever”)!
“Two thumbs up” to Frank, Trace and their “The Mads are Back!” live movie riffing appearance at the Alamo Drafthouse in Ashburn, Virginia! Hope all fellow MSTies (throughout the Washington/metropolitan area) enjoyed their live show!
Disclaimer: “The Mads Are Back!” is not connected to RiffTrax.
Thurs., April 13 at 8 p.m. (local time), with an encore (pre-recorded) presentation on Tue., April 18 at 7:30 p.m. (local time).

UPDATE (4/18): Unfortunately (shortly before the 7:30 p.m. screening of the encore of RiffTrax Live: “Samurai Cop”), Regal’s Westview cineplex cancelled the encore screening without any prior notification (yet the sign letters were still up for the RiffTrax encore on Regal’s sign, according to the photograph that was taken).
